Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Provost & Director of Student Financial Services (SFS), the Deputy Director is responsible for providing day-to-day leadership and oversight to the SFS office.
The Deputy Director will have primary oversight for Compliance & Operations, Student & Family Engagement, and Systems & Technology.
The Deputy Director directs all activities and plans the calendar for office operations, including implementing policy, providing regular staff training and development opportunities, offering supportive guidance and effective supervision, and ensuring the timely delivery of aid to students in an atmosphere of superior customer service
The Deputy Director leads the Financial Aid Appeals Committee and co-leads the Admissions & Aid operations team, as well as serving on the SFS Senior Leadership Team, the Admissions & Aid Planning Team, and the Enrollment Planning team, among others.
The Deputy Director works collaboratively with the AVP & Director to implement policies, procedures, and processes in support of Student Financial Services and Undergraduate Admissions goals. The Deputy Director will exercise a great deal of independent judgment in discharging the responsibilities of the position and will perform other essential duties and functions as assigned by the AVP & Director.
The Deputy Director serves as second in command and can represent the AVP & Director internally and externally as needed. The incumbent must be a skillful communicator who can build relationships with a wide range of internal and external partners. This position requires someone who is resourceful, solution-oriented, an excellent problem solver, and a strong team player, capable of implementing change.

The Deputy Director will work independently and collaboratively to:
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee Compliance & Operations, including day-to-day operational leadership of SFS, oversight of regular and ad hoc reporting, and oversight of federal, state, and institutional compliance.
Manage three direct reports and two indirect reports in the Operations and Compliance area.
Oversee completion of the FISAP and all other Federal and State reports. Oversee completion of surveys and requests for information.
Serve as the primary SFS point of contact for the annual FSA A-133 audit and the U.S. Department of Education.
Develop and manage policies, and procedures, staffing and annual training needs for SFS.
Oversee Student and Family Engagement, including all SFS counseling functions, the SFS Service Center, the Federal Work Study Program, file review, and merit scholarship administration.
Manage one direct report and seven indirect reports in the Student and Family Engagement area.
Provide indirect oversight of the university’s Federal Work Study and merit scholarship programs and will serve in an advisory role in support of the programs.
Provides indirect supervision of the SFS Service Center, which receives in-person payments, answers questions by phone, in person, and by E-mail.
Provides occasional financial assistance counseling to students and families.
Systems and Technology.
Manage one direct report in the Systems and Technology area.
Provides leadership and support for Manager of Systems and Integrations, whose responsibilities include non-programming system support, daily data loads, system security, and general system maintenance.
Stay up-to-date on evolving technology and continually be open to opportunities that leverage existing and new technologies to enhance and simplify the student experience, to increase efficiency, or to increase the effectiveness of SFS.
Works closely with the Assistant Vice Provost & Director, Vice Provost, and the Vice Provost’s leadership team in strategic discussions and decision-making processes. Provides feedback and consultation to staff regarding programs, projects, processes, and innovations in the office and in the field.
In support of SFS, Undergraduate Admissions, and university goals, and in response to changes in federal and state requirements, recommend, implement, and communicate necessary changes to internal policy, procedures, and processes.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Eight - ten years of financial aid experience with demonstrated increasing administrative responsibility.
Two years demonstrated experience successfully leading/managing a team at a four-year degree granting institution.
Extensive knowledge of Title IV regulations governing federal student aid, including verification, need analysis, conflicting information, federal reporting requirements, and return of Title IV aid (R2T4).
Master’s degree in related field.
Active in local, state, regional, or national financial aid related organizations, such as College Board, NASFAA, etc.
Previous project management experience.
Excellent leadership and management skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills – effective, accurate, and clear.
Excellent customer service skills; ability to maintain effective working relationships and address the potential and current needs of students.
Knowledge of higher education, specifically financial aid.
Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.
Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds. Cross-cultural competency.
Ability to organize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

The hiring range for this position is $73,944 - $97,968 annually.
