The Library curriculum is designed to both enrich content across curricular areas and to deliver core learning in information literacy, through an inquiry-based, student-centered approach.
The librarian oversees the middle and lower school library collections, which is an essential part of our school community. The librarian will coordinate and orchestrate a school library program that encompasses all aspects of instructional resources. She/he will provide leadership in instructional design, technology integration, information literacy instruction, and collaboration. She/he will empower our school community to effectively use information and technology for a variety of tasks.
Responsibilities and Duties
Create and sustain a joyful, vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming library space that celebrates learning, reading, inquiry, and collaboration
Model best practices in the use of educational technology and support students and faculty in the safe, responsible, effective, and creative use of technology applications in service of student learning and development of ethical digital citizens
Serve as a resource and support for the School in the area of innovative and emerging technologies for learning
Manage print and digital collections, to support curriculum and independent reading.
Organize enrichment activities such as author visits and interactive projects
Model, facilitate, and advocate for equitable access to and the ethical use of resources in a variety of formats
Commit to supporting the school’s work in diversity, equity, and inclusion; ensuring the library collection represents a diverse and multicultural range of authors and content
Collaborate with faculty to advance core learning in their content areas and look for opportunities to create cross-curricular learning experiences employing 21s century skills incorporating the use of literacy, information literacy and technology
Plan and teach Lower School library classes, including leading read-alouds, supporting student book selection, teaching research skills, and offering information literacy instruction.
Support middle school teachers with book talks, research skills, and resources for research-based projects.
Use data to evaluate and inform decisions about library policies, resources, and services such as media and library subscriptions within the established budget and manage their circulation
Engage in leadership, collaboration, advocacy, and professional networking.
Promote literacy and reading for pleasure among students; maintain current knowledge of appropriate book recommendations for K-8 students
Engage in faculty meetings and professional development programs at department, team, division and whole school levels
Additional duties include, but are not limited to: working with parent/guardian volunteers to prepare for the annual Book Fair; carpool, attending staff meetings during and after school hours as required, etc.
Master’s Degree in Librarianship from a program accredited by the American Library Association or a Master’s Degree with a specialty in school librarianship from an ALA/AASL Nationally Recognized program in an education unit accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation
3-5 years of full-time work in a supervisory role in a school library
Experience that demonstrates an ability to relate well to children
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Works well with parent volunteers
Passionate about books and inspiring young readers
Demonstrates strong classroom management skills
