This role will drive a progressive global 3Rs scientific program to further develop and strengthen Novartis's culture of ethical science and serve as an expert in the development and employment of advancements in the reduction, replacement and refinement of animal studies.
Key roles: Design and set 3Rs scientific program for novel approaches to study design, biostatistics, and research methods, applying the tenets of therioepistemology to the drug discovery and development process.
Lead innovative 3Rs research strategy to address scientific gaps and enhance our animal research program. Collaborate with Novartis scientists, animal welfare, comparative medicine teams as well as external partners to enhance the scope and impact of 3Rs research.
Serve as a 3Rs science subject matter expert, consultant, and liaison for both discovery and development scientists; build effective cross-functional teams to partner with research staff outside of the Global Animal Welfare team to enable broader impact of the 3Rs through innovative research.
Promote and share scientifically-based 3Rs advancements with internal and external audiences through presentation, publication, and participation in and leadership of 3Rs committees and working groups.
Develop and grow academic partnerships to train future veterinarians and scientists in the design, conduct, and analysis of 3Rs science.
Responsibilities *Partner with 3Rs Leader to manage and promote the Global and Local 3Rs Award Programs. *Partner with the Emerging Technologies team to support and develop 3Rs advancements. *Coordinate with NIBR and Corporate functions to develop, lead, and promote resourcing of internal 3Rs advancements. *Surveying use and enhance effective employment of validated alternatives in Novartis studies as well as collaborate with Novartis scientists and external partners to develop and validate new alternatives to animals. *Keep key animal welfare, comparative medicine, scientific, and ethics stakeholders current on relevant 3Rs literature. *Participates as member of Global Animal Welfare leadership team in support of global AW initiatives. *Serves as a mentor and contributes to the development of staff in the proper design, conduct, and analysis of 3Rs scientific studies.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Minimum requirements *Doctoral degree in the field of animal or veterinary science. Biostatistical doctoral degree will also be considered, if 3Rs science expertise is also met. *8+ years of experience in conducting research relative to the 3Rs. *Demonstrated expertise in the field of animal welfare and 3Rs science through successful awarding of grants, publications, participation and leadership in 3Rs-related committees and organizations, and invitations to speak at national and international meetings. *Biostatical expertise (3yrs+), including applying data science to complex problems. *Demonstrated expertise in training others in the conduct of 3Rs science through teaching and mentoring of students and scientific staff. *Proven expertise in identifying 3Rs key issues, trends, and cause/effects as they impact research and business decision making. *Experience with drug development and toxicology *Ability to engage in up to 25% travel for global responsibilities.
Nice to have: *Experience with or willingness to learn supervised and unsupervised Machine Learning techniques, and programming languages such as R, Python or others. *Experience with the CRO environment.
