The Department of Furniture Design in the Division of Architecture and Design is pleased to announce the openings for two faculty appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence to commence fall 2020: a one-year full-time term appointment and a two-year full-time term appointment.

The department seeks applicants who demonstrate excellence in the field of furniture and object design. Candidates should have the ability to support links between idea generation, design development, and the making process using hand, industrial and digital fabrication tools, technologies and processes applied to a wide range of materials. The ability to lead research and partnered projects, to curate and develop exhibitions and contribute to the social value of design is highly desirable. Ideal candidates should have strong leadership skills along with the ability and experience to guide students through the completion of their degree project/thesis. They should demonstrate the capacity to inspire students to develop a unique personal design approach. Ideal candidates will be actively engaged in the international design world and have a solid understanding of making. While rigorous dedication to teaching and student development is paramount, candidates must also possess a strong ability to achieve ongoing distinction in their own professional practice.
The department contributes to contemporary design education through a pedagogy that unifies thinking and making. With excellent studio facilities for wood, metal, polymers, and upholstery, the ideal candidate should be able to support students through the process of creating highly resolved work from concept to finished object. We seek individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences who will support the collegial culture that defines our department.
Job Qualifications Required:
· BFA in Art/Design or related field · An active creative practice and a portfolio of work that reflects a strong personal vision and advanced competencies, including proficiency in drawing, model making, prototyping, CAD and presentation, knowledge of production techniques and the evolving state of professional practice. · Teaching experience at the college level · Proven or promised ability to teach across multiple levels, from introductory to advanced courses. · Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
