The Junior Developer is part of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for assisting with internal projects as well as supporting a research project and website (cps-vo.org) collectively referred to as the Cyber-Physical Systems Virtual Organization ("CPS-VO"), which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This is a permanent, full-time, entry-level development position. Reporting directly to the System Architect, the Junior Developer regularly collaborates with various teams including but not limited to one or more Principal Investigators, Research Project Managers, Program Coordinators, and other engineers.
The Institute for Software Integrated Systems conducts basic and applied research in the area of systems and information science and engineering. Applications of its technology span a wide range of software-intensive systems from small embedded devices, through real-time distributed systems, to globally deployed complex systems. Software is increasingly essential to the functions of these systems, and it is also the primary means of adapting them to their environments and users. Our research interests lie in the theoretical foundations, modeling, design, engineering, and educational aspects of these systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
Migrate internal site from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8
Write clean, well-commented custom PHP code
Assist with theming, layout, and usability issues
Determine work-arounds and write patches for software bugs
Write software tests and perform software testing
Assist with custom module migrations and research tool integrations on public portal
Assist with content migration, develop software tools for automation as needed
Plan for and successfully manage multiple varying priorities
Produce clear technical documentation
Support technical presentations and training
Travel 1-2 weeks per year
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field is necessary.
The following are necessary:
Experience with programming in a scripting language
Understanding of object-oriented architecture, design patterns, and client-server applications
Comfortable in a Linux environment and with the command line interface
Solid grasp of how a website functions, and what runs client-side vs. server-side
Understanding of website security issues
The following skills are preferred:
Apache web server
Identification and repair of security issues in websites
Drupal 6, 7, and/or 8
SVN and/or GIT
