Partners with clients to design, develop, implement and maintain business solutions regarding data management and analysis. This includes database administration, data consolidation, data analysis and management reporting. Utilizes software to generate metrics and develops actionable recommendations. Collaborates with various function teams such as marketing, research, and IT to achieve business results.
The Northwestern Neighborhood & Network Initiative (N3) is seeking a Data Analyst Senior with strong technical skills to work on large-scale social policy research projects designed to understand how the connections among people, places, and organizations influence a variety of outcomes related to public safety, crime, violence, and policing in Chicago. The Data Analyst Senior will work on a portfolio of projects across these different areas.
The Data Analyst Senior will oversee the implementation of applied social science research projects aimed at helping solve real-world problems. He/she will join a diverse and growing team of researchers, staff, and students in organizing and presenting data, including developing data management pipelines and databases, maintaining large project codebases, and creating interactive reports and visualizations. This position requires an individual who works effectively as a part of team and on multiple projects simultaneously. The position offers the opportunity to work directly with leading social policy researchers, civic partners, and local city and governmental agencies.
Core responsibilities of the Data Analyst Seniorinclude:
Building data infrastructure: This includes building ETL (extract, transform, and load) pipelines for processing, storing, and disseminating administrative data to research analyst(s) and developing and maintaining systems and culture for reproducible, transparent, version-controlled research and analysis using cloud storage and Git/Github.
Problem solve new data process solutions and techniques.
Serving as data liaison for research partners: This includes developing and maintaining relationships with research partners and clearly communicating N3’s data requirements; developing and implementing solutions for transparent and secure protocols for data sharing and storage, including de-identification when necessary; creating and maintaining dashboards for data visualization; and performing basic data cleaning and quality checks.
Research data project management: This includes creating and implementing plans around data needs to ensure that analysts have the data they need in time to perform analysis; working with the director and research partners to ensure timely and regular data transfers; and ensuring adherence to IRB guidelines.
Ad-hoc Analysis: This includes creating basic maps and visualizations as requested by the director and partners; creating descriptive/summary statistics from datasets; and conducting basic code reviews for project team members.
This is a one-year termed position with opportunity for renewal based on performance and available funding.
Manages and plans for data/analysis requests and projects.
Provides consultation to partners on appropriate data management, methodological issues and statistical analyses.
Collaborates with technical staff explaining needs of functional users. Serve on committees related to data structure and governance.
Reviews reports before presentation to ensure quality and accuracy.
Develops and maintains documentation of process for quality assurance and reporting methodology
Defines, develops and communicates new standards and best practices.
Develop queries and quality metrics.
Interprets results using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation via statistical analysis to complex statistical analysis.
Determine data structure for local datasets.
Develops and documents standards for data quality and regulatory compliance pertaining to reporting.
Ensures quality and compliance by reviewing reports.
Provides work direction and/or supervises staff such as team members, subordinates, contractors, vendors, students, etc.
Recommends staff hires/terminations.
Coaches and mentors staff.
Manages projects ensuring timelines and deliverables are met and meet expectations.
Other duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
4 years data analysis/report writing or similar experience required.

Basic familiarity with command line coding.
Experience with basic statistical modeling of social science data.
Familiarity working with structured and relationship databases and social science data.
Respect and discretion when it comes to handling sensitive data
Master’s degree at an accredited college or university OR undergraduate degree with equivalent work experience. Field of study open but technical training is required.
Proficiency in R required
Experience with Python and SQL strongly preferred
4 years data analysis/report writing or similar experience required.
