Senior Linux Engineer, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)-2015038
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is an academic community just shy of 1,400 individuals (faculty, staff and students) and includes global research and teaching efforts through extensions of our Pittsburgh academic programs and research in Silicon Valley, Portugal, Rwanda, Thailand and Singapore.
ECE has an immediate opening for a Senior Linux Engineer. In this role, you will be a key member of our Information Technology Services group and will report directly to the Network Manager.
Core responsibilities include:
Designing, maintaining, deploying, and customer support of the Linux ecosystem in IT Services for the ECE Department and its worldwide programs
Providing technical support at all levels to IT Services staff and affiliated customer groups
Adjusting to intended audiences with varying levels of understanding and background
Working in parallel with multiple projects, meeting strict deadlines, and coordinating with all levels of IT Services staff
Supervising student employees as needed
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent field required? Master's degree preferred
At least three years of current Linux data center and enterprise desktop administration in a heterogeneous environment
System security in client and server OS
Expertise in RHEL, package maintenance and distribution, authentication systems, license management, distributed computing, and Apache web hosting
Technical lead experience in virtual system deployments [VMWare, RHEV]
Automation tools and techniques? scripting in contemporary, common languages and related IDE's [C, Python, Ruby, shell]
Excellent command of version control systems
Ability to manage complex and potentially undocumented issues with lowlevel tools such as syslog, tcpdump, dmesg
Strong understanding of configuration files, system variables, and editing tools
Strong fundamental understanding of Cisco switching and routing
Experience with modern project management methodologies
Advanced understanding of computer operating systems (RHEL), systems management software (Puppet/Satellite), virtualization and computer networking, Linux operating system internals
Experience with security analysis and certificate management? detailed knowledge of Kerberos, experience with FlexLM? with highlyavailable network file systems (NFS/AFS/DFS)
Advanced ability to manage complicated computer or network problems, experience with monitoring and metric systems
Poweruser understanding of other desktop or server operating systems such as macOS/OSX, Windows, WAN technologies, highlyavailable cloud service deployments, Active Directory, LDAP, and SSSD
