Under a Cooperative Agreement between the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), comprehensive studies are being conducted on the ecology and life history of Pacific salmonids and other fishes. The primary purpose of these studies is to provide critical information for conservation and management of threatened and endangered species. The research team consists of UCSC staff, faculty, and students and collaborative researchers from the NMFS Santa Cruz Laboratory. Computational work and laboratory work will be conducted at the NMFS Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Santa Cruz, CA. Field work is conducted in coastal waters of the California Marine Ecosystem. Results from this program are intended to benefit resource managers (e.g., Pacific Fisheries Management Council) and fisheries and resource science in general.
Under the general direction of the Groundfish Analysis Team project manager, the incumbent will conduct research on the reproductive ecology, particularly the fecundity, of a number of rockfish species in the California coastal ecosystem. The incumbent will work in collaboration with a team of other researchers. Responsibilities will include conducting fecundity estimates using both visual methods and imaging software, support field collections and laboratory analyses of adult and juvenile rockfishes, support data recording and analysis, and otherwise provide assistance to collaborators. The incumbent will be expected to participate in field work at sea, sometimes in physically demanding conditions.
