RESEARCH ENGINEER , Aeronautics and Astronautics , to join the Cryogenic Hydrogen-Energy Electric Transport Aircraft (CHEETA) project, which is an innovative concept for a civil aircraft. The aircraft, which includes a high degree of integration between aircraft and propulsion systems, has the potential to offer several benefits over conventional air systems used today or alternative propulsion systems currently being studied. Responsibilities include developing a foundational framework for incorporating propulsion-airframe integration of distributed propulsion system at the vehicle concept level; developing a turboelectric hydrogen system to serve as a baseline configuration, where a hydrogen-burning gas turbine generator serves as the principal supply mechanism for electric power, rather than a fuel cell/battery system; presenting research at conferences and review meetings; publishing research findings; and helping to write funding proposals. Will work in a collaborative environment with faculty, a postdoctoral researcher, students, and external collaborators.
Job Requirements REQUIRED : Ph.D. in a field related to air-breathing propulsion and turbomachinery focused on propulsion system airframe integration for highly integrated vehicles and at least one postdoctoral year in the field; three years of further related experience, especially industrial experience with companies that develop aircraft; demonstrated expertise in propulsion system integration for advanced civil aircraft, supported by publications; GPkit modeling skills; knowledge of boundary layer ingestion, distributed propulsion, and electrified aircraft propulsion; track record of scholarly innovation in areas of expertise; ability to interface with sponsors and external project advisors; excellent project management and organizational skills; demonstrated strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB; and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues.
