Neurotrauma & Neurorehabilitation Research Scientist

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation wishes to appoint a Neurotrauma & Neurorehabilitation Scientist within the Neuro-Rehabilomics Research Laboratory (NRRL) which includes both human subject and animal-based research. The Neurotrauma and Neurorehabilitation Scientist (NNS) will be responsible for overseeing the research goals and obligations of funded awards within the NRRL to maximize scientific progress. As such, one major role for this position will be to serve as research project manager to ensure efficient and timely completion of grant activities. This work will involve coordination, planning, and implementation with other NRRL staff and trainees.
The incumbent will support and also lead multiple research logistics functions. Research Logistics & Coordination Functions that will aid completion of funded projects may include: 1) serving as a consultant to the principal investigator in the conduct of their projects, 2) monitoring, facilitating, and where appropriate, participating in data analysis for publications and grants, 3) providing review and/or primary development of scientific manuscripts 4) creating training programs and tutorials for students and trainees, 5) supporting thesis/dissertation development for graduate level trainees.
Other functions may include identifying, coordinating and utilizing resources involving collaborating labs. In addition, the NNS will 1) collaborate with labs, vendors, consultants, or subject-matter-experts to solve research questions or technical problems, and 2) contribute research content to post-award reports, scientific research papers, manuscripts for publication, and lectures. The NNS may be asked to identify grant opportunities to which NRRL could apply, and managing and assisting the principal investigator and other group members in generating content for these grant applications. Technical & Research Implementation Functions: for NRRL will include providing and/or acquiring expertise with a variety of biological assay formats that support the work and goals of the laboratory.
A particular focus on immunology assays, including flow cytometry and functional immune cell stimulation assays, immunogenetics, and other functional, histological, and molecular assays relevant to neuroimmunology are desirable given the emphasis of the research group in these areas. The NNS should have a foundational background in acquired neurological injury as well as experimental models and preparations. The NNS may conduct some of these assays and/or train other research assistants or trainees on their implementation. The NNS should be familiar with experimental acquired brain injury research models and have experience with small animal in vivo surgeries. Program Management & Infrastructure Functions: The incumbent will support research coordinators and laboratory staff with reporting & compliance requirements including animal/human protocol modifications and renewals and coordinating scientific meetings.
The NNS will work closely with the Financial Administrator to develop budgets and ensure projects stay on budget and facilitate appropriate charging of study related procedures. The NNS will be responsible for facilitating/completing/or supervising the development of best practices protocols within the laboratory and create efficiencies in and streamline research processes e.g. data management/analysis, data grooming formatting and entry, biosample sample processing, behavioral/molecular procedures. S/he will be expected to understand lab policies and procedures and make recommendations for improvements to increase efficiency of current active projects and implement approved changes. As a Neurotrauma & Neurorehabilitation Scientist, s/he will be expected to infuse their knowledge of Neurotrauma & Neurorehabilitation, and methodological expertise neuroscience and immunology, into the diverse functions of this position.
This goal would be accomplished by thoroughly understanding each project's goals, predicting and resolving roadblocks, and providing multi-pronged scientific, methodological, and administrative support. Eligible candidates must have a PhD degree in immunology, neuroscience/neurobiology, or other related field, preferably with expertise in Neurotrauma and/or Neurorehabilitation, and have a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral experience. Prior experience working in either academia or industry will be beneficial, as this position will involve interfacing with industry partners. Prior supervisory and project management experience is preferred. The candidate must demonstrate exceptional professionalism, communication, and organizational skills.
Doctoral (or licensed professional degree) with at least 3 years of postgraduate research experience required. Prior experience clinical and/or preclinical research in neurotrauma and/or neurorehabilitation preferred. Some prior experience with industry preferred.
