The mission of the University of Michigan Office of Research (UMOR) is to catalyze, support, and safeguard U-M research. To strengthen our ability to serve and support our reporting units, the Office of the Vice President of Research is seeking an experienced, business professional to serve as the Associate Director for Business Services to support the U-M Office of Research (UMOR). The Associate Director (AD) will report to the Executive Director for Resource Planning and Management (EDRPM) and works as part of team of other functional Associate Directors (Human Resources and Information Technology) to drive continuous improvement and optimization of UMOR business services. This position will have oversight over financial and research administration policy and procedure and work closely with the Assistant Controller on reporting and internal controls. This position will serve as the operational interface with UMOR unit directors in these areas ensuring timely communication and support of unit business needs. As a member of the RPM lead team, the Associate Director has responsibility for helping to develop a highly effective, customer-centric business infrastructure that values inclusion, equity and emotional intelligence. The Associate Director also has responsibility for representing UMOR’s operational interests by serving as a key member on University committees, workgroups, and councils.
This position has direct supervisory responsibility for UMOR’s functional research administration lead as well as a team of business services professionals tasked with providing business administrative support to a subset of UMOR units.
Educational experience in finance and research administration generally associated with a Master's degree or equivalent years of work experience.
5-7 years of administrative experience in a supervisory capacity.
Extensive knowledge of U-M finance and research administration policy and practical experience interfacing with U-M partners and developing policies and standard operating procedures.
Competency in organizational navigation and ability to deal effectively and persuasively with individuals of varying levels of institutional authority.
Ability to use astute judgment, think strategically, analyze logically, and cogently and persuasively present summaries and recommendations.
Demonstrated commitment to developing strong teams, inclusive environments, and healthy cultures.
Familiarity with University standard practices and guidelines.
Strong project management skills and a track record of successful project management.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
