The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Ancona’s fundraising efforts including, the major gifts program, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The Director of Development reports directly to the Head of School in all development and fundraising endeavors.
The Director of Development is part of the External Affairs team, overseeing the Assistant Director of Development and working closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications and the Director of Enrollment Management & Tuition Assistance to retain current students; identify, recruit and secure excellent new prospective students; and inspire parents, friends, and alumni to give.

The Director of Development is an adept thinker with a strength in building interpersonal relationships and with a high emotional IQ. The Director of Development is able to work closely with the other members of the school’s administrative team and steward gifts to the school in a meaningful way.
Provide counsel to Head of School
Help Head of School create long-range goals for Ancona and determine funding viability of such goals
Help Head of School with other strategic projects as needed
Establish annual goals for the Development Department and regularly report on progress towards those goals to Head
Build community to maximize retention and cultivate potential donors
Maintain strong relationships with as many parents as possible
Attend all Ancona community-building events:
Fun Run/Ice Cream Social
Provide and strengthen volunteer opportunities and support (with Assistant Director of Development)
Help secure Ancona representation at appropriate neighborhood events and happenings
Meet with key donors to the school to cultivate current relationships, and identify potential new donors
Solicit prospective donors
Together with Head of School, establish and maintain a list of funding opportunities in the $5,000-$50,000+ range
Solicit donors for restricted gifts for specific projects and carefully support the people managing those projects to completion to ensure a positive experience for the donors
Focus on facilities improvements and other midrange investments that will improve recruitment
Meet revenue goals for our Annual Gala each year.
Assist Assistant Director of Development with:
Maintain accurate donor lists in Commons and online
Prompt, heartfelt, accurate thank you letters ideally within 48 hours of receiving gift (no more than one week)
Final report for major campaigns and donor initiatives
Assist Director of Marketing & Communications with:
Ensure efficient and effective department operations
Submit an annual budget and monitor spending for all development programs
Provide the Head of School and the Board with records and statistics related to development activities as appropriate
Together with the Chief Financial Officer, design and maintain effective management reports for the Head of School, Finance Committee, Institutional Advancement Committee and the Board.
Together with Assistant Director of Development, create policies for the effective and efficient management of our constituent database
Manage the donor database – update records, clean data, etc
Support the Board of Trustees
Provide staff support to the Institutional Advancement Committee, the Gala Committee, the Committee on Trustees, the Honorary Trustees, the Community Relations Task Force, and related ad hoc committees as necessary
Recruit volunteer leaders
Together with Head of School and Board of Trustees create annual goals for each committee
Set meetings, create agenda, send follow up assignment reminders
Help ensure that each group achieves its goals and serves the School in the most strategic way possible
Provide oversight to Assistant Director of Development to provide logistical support for these committees such as meeting prep (room reservation and set up form, preparing materials, securing food, etc)
Keep Head of School abreast of committee activity, challenges, and progress towards goals
Establish new Alumni Association
Find our alumni
Ask teachers, parents of alumni, other alumni to help
Maintain updated contact information for alums
Work with Middle School Division Head to engage young alumni
Identify potential donors
Research donor trends – when do people start giving? Does their giving increase or decrease over time? When do they stop giving? How can we tailor our approach with this knowledge?
Oversee the work of the Assistant Director of Development, serve on the Board of Trustees’ Institutional Advancement Committee, and manage all fundraising events including active involvement in any future capital campaigns.
Coordinate with Director of Technology to ensure adequate safeguards are in place, including:
Compliance with the American with Disabilities Act
Compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPA)
Copyright infringement, policies on the use of third-party content by teachers
Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge software
Serve on the Head of School’s Leadership Team
Be actively involved in developing and executing a Strategic Plan for the school
Represent the school at various regional, state, and national associations relative to the role of Development
Participate in community duties such as morning handshaking, drop off and pick up assistance, various staff committees, etc
Perform other duties in pursuit of the school’s mission as assigned by the Head of School
Bachelor’s degree required.
CFRE preferred. If not CFRE, Ancona may help support progress toward CFRE.
At least five years of experience in non-profit fundraising, preferably in an independent school
Proven success in a senior administrative role including working with a Board
Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate with children, families, and staff; strong communication skills, both as a writer to various audiences and as a presenter
Keen analytical skills and a detail-oriented work style
Demonstrated fundraising success with both annual and capital gifts
Ability to work collaboratively with a small administrative team
Patience and sense of humor
Enjoy working with children and families
Ability and willingness to engage in high-level strategic thinking and problem solving while also managing the hands-on aspects of the job
Expertise in making public presentations in order to demonstrate financial models and reports
Experience as a supervisor or organizational leader, including direct management of a team, project management, committee membership, and leadership
A growth mindset and an openness to feedback
Strong computer skills with an expert-level background in spreadsheets and databases
