Harvard Catalyst | The Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center at Harvard Medical School has developed the Shared Research Information Network (SHRINE), an open-source software system that allows investigators to query a network of participating academic medical centers. Funded by NCATS (National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences), the ACT (Accrual to Clinical Trials) project seeks to leverage the SHRINE software across a large, national network of research organizations.
We seek an Application Support Engineer to play a key role in the expansion and ongoing success of the ACT network. We seek a motivated professional with strong communication and organizational skills plus proven problem-solving abilities in prior technical support roles. The ideal candidate would be able to operate as part of a team and independently, demonstrate creativity in finding solutions, and employ a strong customer service mindset. The Application Support Engineer has the following major responsibilities:
Work with the SHRINE software engineering team and other groups to gain and maintain a deep understanding of our software applications
Work with project managers and network sys admins across a network of 40+ institutions to coordinate the deployment of SHRINE and other software, escalating issues as required
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues (such as firewall, certificate management, and software- related issues) in a timely fashion, following issue-tracking protocols
Monitor and participate in project listservs to foster a vibrant and engaged network technical community
Write high-quality technical documentation that supports network sys admins
Represent the needs of the sys admin community to ACT stakeholders and the SHRINE engineering team to inform development and deployment plans
This is a two-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding. Harvard offers an outstanding benefits package including:

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
BA/BS in engineering, computer science, or a related field. The candidate will have 2+ years of combined experience in systems administration and technical customer support. A Master's degree in computer science or related field may count towards experience.
GNU/Linux systems administration, scripting (bash, Python, etc.), SQL, basic database administration (postgres, Oracle, MySQL), general networking skills (firewalls, certificatemanagement/exchange), virtualization and containers QEMU/KVM, Vagrant, Docker). Candidates should be comfortable collaborating and communicating with technical leadership, software engineers, system administrators, and end-users while building and maintaining excellent working relationships. Experience with academic networks, top-tier infrastructure and front-line software support highly desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This is a grant-funded position through 4/30/2022 with strong possibility of renewal.
