Senior Database Administrator / Professional Technologist 4 - Information Technology Services 14490
The Information Technology Services department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Senior Database Administrator. This position is responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of multiple Oracle databases which support mission and business critical systems for West Virginia University, such as the student information, learning management, research administration, degree auditing, and data warehouse systems.
To be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Install, configure, and manage multiple database instances on multiple servers for training, development, testing, and production environments. Ensure regular database backups are completed and perform regular tests of the restore process and disaster recovery plans. Perform database maintenance, software upgrades, and patches. Monitor database performance, logs, and scheduled job outputs; troubleshoot and resolve issues in a timely manner.
This position is on call 24x7 to ensure the availability of production systems and serves as a liaison to vendors when issues are considered Severity l (the production system is down or when the university is severely impacted).
Research new patches, upgrades, and configuration changes for database and application servers. Develop product roadmaps based on the research, and work with the appropriate teams and business owners to implement the roadmaps.
Plan and lead assigned projects for the database administration team. Meet with business owners and users to determine project requirements, to assess and plan for resource requirements, create and maintain project plans, and to report project progress to business owners and management.
Monitor security bulletins assess the impact on University systems and take appropriate actions to mitigate threats. Evaluate user requests for security access and grant appropriate access. This position works with the end-user to develop, test and implement new roles for security access. This position also monitors systems for security and access violations. When violations are detected, this position must work quickly to evaluate the situation and take immediate action to prevent the loss or inappropriate disclosure of data, or disruption of the University's systems. In addition, this position must develop and maintain database security documentation and standards in collaboration with Information Security Services.
Monitor and respond to service desk tickets that are assigned to the DBA group. This task requires the candidate to work directly with students, faculty and staff to troubleshoot and solve complex problems. When necessary this position works as technical liaison to vendors to solve problems.
Create procedures, plans, and documentation needed by other database administrators and operations teams to support University databases and systems.
Train other DBAs or related peer technical staff in areas where incumbent has developed a high level of expertise. This position will also mentor less experienced DBAs.
Attend classes, workshops, and conferences to learn about enhancements and changes affecting the University's application and database environments, including the latest technology trends. Attend workshops and classes on leadership and supervision, in support of position responsibilities.
Deliver a high level of customer service by actively engaging with customers to understand and anticipate their needs. Use customer feedback to continually improve services.
Acts as a backup to other positions as necessary within the unit. Performs other necessary and appropriate duties as directed by Senior Management.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computing Engineering, Management Information Systems, or an equivalent combination of education, certifications, and directly related work experience.
Five (5) years overall technology experience in a complex environment.
Four (4) years database administration experience.
Four (4) years experience in installing, configuring, maintenance and managing application and databases.
Two (2) years experience in providing technical assistance to end users.
Two (2) years with project leadership experience.
Proven experience in relational database administration. Proven experience with Oracle databases is preferred.
Proven experience with UNIX operating systems and UNIX shell scripting, preferably Red Hat Linux.
Demonstrated proficiency in problem solving, the ability to self-direct and prioritize tasks, good oral and written communication skills, general computer skills, and computer programming.
Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and justify approach used, resolve complex issues, explain and/or train staff on technical features of an application or process, and the ability to express technical information to non-technical users as well as to gather information from them relating to system needs and issues.
Strong analytical skills to be able to research, analyze, detect, and technically correct developed processes.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact at all organizational levels and with technical staff managers, and end-users.
Ability to manage and complete projects on time
Demonstrated proficiency in technical project management
Knowledge of information security issues, requirements, and trends .
Requirements Oracle Certification (OCP) in Database Administration desired.
