The rotating internship with Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Services (VSES)/Animal Hospital of Pittsford/and Rochester Community Animal Clinic (RCAC) is a collaborative effort which began in 1987. Since inception, we have had over 120 individuals successfully complete our program. We have an excellent record of placing motivated interns into residencies across the country. We have matched interns into residencies in dentistry, internal medicine, surgery, emergency/critical care medicine, ophthalmology, oncology, zoological medicine, anatomic pathology, lab animal medicine, neurology, dermatology, radiology, cardiology and clinical pathology. In addition many of our interns have continued on with Monroe Veterinary Associates (MVA), working as emergency clinicians, general practice associate veterinarians and progressing into leadership positions throughout MVA.
If you are looking for a challenging, exciting internship with an opportunity for both personal and professional growth, your search has ended! Our well structured program is an outstanding opportunity for 8 motivated veterinarians to gain exposure to complex referral cases, emergency and critical care medicine, high volume surgical procedures, outpatient wellness and urgent care, as well as high-quality general practice. These educational opportunities, combined with your broad clinical exposure are designed to prepare you for application for a residency in your field of interest or a fast-paced, advanced private practice or emergency hospital.
Our 26,000-square-foot facility is the only 24-hour emergency/specialty practice in the greater Rochester area, serving a population of over one-million. Our hospital is well equipped with a digital ECG, 1.5 tesla Siemens MRI, on-site 16-slice helical CT, digital radiography, ultrasound, rigid and flexible endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, complete onsite full service diagnostic laboratory and comprehensive surgical facilities. Our facility also includes a 3500 square foot veterinary continuing education center.
Our specialists include two surgeons, three internists, one criticalist, one part-time radiologist, two part-time ophthalmologists, a part-time neurologist and a part-time dermatologist. In addition to our facility and equipment expansion, we are actively recruiting for a cardiologist, a full time ophthalmologist, and a third surgeon. Our emergency department consists of eleven attending clinicians, including eight internship-trained doctors and one ABVP diplomate. Our staff is very proud to support our well established internship and residency programs that currently include three surgical residents, one surgical intern, two internal medicine specialty interns and up to eight rotating interns.
Specialty rotations include internal medicine, surgery, and critical care under the direct supervision of board certified specialists. You will also rotate through emergency and have exposure to dermatology, radiology, ophthalmology and neurology on a limited basis. Other rotations may be available on-site as new staff is added or off-site through externships, depending on the intern’s areas of interest and our ability to foster such a program.
Emergency/critical care rotations are divided into day and over-night shifts. During this rotation you will have primary case responsibility with direct mentorship from an attending staff doctor. As your skills and knowledge base improve, your responsibilities will increase. Approximately 1/3 of your internship will be spent on the emergency service
The General Practice portion of your internship is divided between Animal Hospital of Pittsford and Rochester Community Animal Clinic (RCAC). Animal Hospital of Pittsford, a busy, 6 doctor general practice, is committed to providing mentorship and hosts the general practice portion of the internship. Rotations at this hospital provide experience in wellness care, elective and general surgery, dentistry and problem exams under the supervision of experienced general practitioners. Your time at RCAC is structured as a “wet lab” and will give you the opportunity to observe and participate in a low income, high volume spay/neuter clinic.
To complete your educational opportunities you will be expected to attend and actively participate in daily rounds including case-based rounds, journal club, and didactic rounds. As time permits, you are encouraged to attend continuing education lectures sponsored by local and regional organizations (many of which are offered on-sight at Duncan's Center for Veterinary Education) and to attend one (1) national CE conference. Interns are required to present one formal seminar.
We seek enthusiastic, self-motivated interns who are interested in advancing their education, case management and leadership skills in a team-oriented environment. Rochester is located in Western New York. It offers one of the broadest ranges of cultural, sporting and recreational activities of any comparable sized city in the United States. Many of our interns have stayed in Rochester to join our group, which we believe is a testament to the desirability of living in this community, and the esteem in which our group of practices is held.
NYS veterinary license requirements must be met to be considered. US or Canadian citizenship is required.
Additional Salary Information: $35,000 for 12.5 month internship. 12 month internship with January or September start-dates also available.
