The University of Washington, Seattle, is recruiting for a Lecturer, Part Time in the undergraduate Program on the Environment (PoE) to serve as a core program instructor beginning June 16, 2020. We seek applicants with environmental studies training specifically in the social sciences disciplines. This instructional position has a 9-month academic year term with additional summer teaching also possible, and will be for three years with possibility of renewal. This is a non-tenured position.
This teaching position requires teaching five to six courses per academic year (one to two courses per quarter). We seek applicants with a demonstrated ability to teach and mentor a student body that is diverse with respect to socio-economic status, culture, academic interests, and career paths. A significant portion of that teaching involves core classes for PoE majors. Typical core course assignments include ENVIR 100 (Environmental Studies: Interdisciplinary Foundations); ENVIR 250 (Environmental Studies: Data Types and Methods); and ENVIR 300 (Environmental Studies: Synthesis and Applications).
Instructional responsibilities include mentoring a portion of the Environmental Studies students participating in a 3-course Capstone project. Through collaboration with their internship host, a faculty advisor, and the Capstone Instructor, students produce a tangible research project that is closely related to their academic study.
Specifically, the successful applicant will be expected to:
teach, supervise and mentor diverse students (currently 200+ majors) across a range of environmentally-related disciplines and interdisciplinary areas of study;
train and mentor students in quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, including natural and social science methodologies, and human subjects data such as interviews and surveys;
train students in how to communicate research results and environmental knowledge to varied audiences, using traditional, digital, and social media.
The Program on the Environment (PoE) is an interdisciplinary environmental studies program that has been at the leading edge of interdisciplinary learning and teaching at the UW since 1998. The curriculum integrates a broad spectrum of social science, natural science, and humanities disciplines shaping the field of environmental studies. PoE offers a B.A. in Environmental Studies, and is housed within the UW's College of the Environment, which provides a broad interdisciplinary and globally oriented position for education and for basic and applied research.

Applicants must possess environmental studies training and a PhD or foreign equivalent in any relevant field, a minimum of one year of college or university-level teaching, and a demonstrated ability to implement active learning pedagogy.
