Lawrence Aber Work Location: New York University, Washington Square, with opportunities for travel Work Schedule: Full-time Salary (Pay Range): Commensurate with experience Benefits Eligible: Yes Start/End Date: March 1, 2020 – March 31, 2022 About NYU Global TIES for Children Global TIES for Children is an international research center embedded within New York University's Institute of Human Development and Social Change (IHDSC) and supported by the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute and NYU New York. At New York University's Global TIES for Children we design, evaluate and advise on programs and policies to improve the lives of children and youth in the most vulnerable regions across the globe. Led by University Professors Larry Aber and Hiro Yoshikawa, we work with some of the world's leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and with governments in low-income (LI) and crisis-affected (CA) countries on developing and evaluating innovative approaches to promoting the health, education, and social development of children and their communities. Together with our key strategic partner organizations, our work leverages cutting-edge scientific methods and interdisciplinary collaboration to: - Generate actionable evidence to promote child and youth development by conducting and evaluating powerful strategies to transform relevant "social settings" (i.e., classrooms, schools, families, communities, etc.) that are key drivers of children's learning and well-being;
- Communicate actionable evidence by engaging diverse stakeholders across sectors and regions and disseminating a rigorous evidence base to inform program and policy decisions for children and youth in LI and CA countries; and
- Build human, administrative, and institutional capacity for a robust global science and practice through the provision of professional development and training activities.
Position Summary In collaboration with TIES co-Director J. Lawrence Aber and in close consultation with TIES co-Director Hiro Yoshikawa, the Deputy Director (PELE) is responsible for ensuring the strategic and scientific direction of PELE in alignment with evolving TIES core goals, imperatives, and standards. The Deputy Director has three main responsibilities within the Center: (1) principal investigator of select PELE grants (3EA M&M Phase 2; Templeton award), as part of which she is responsible for ensuring the scientific soundness and successful completion of project goals against budget; (2) strategic oversight and management of PELE resources, including budget, staff, and fundraising; and (3) input into Center-wide development and planning, focused on elaborating and implementing Center and PELE strategic communications goals. The Deputy Director (PELE) position will be at New York University's New York City campus, with periodic travel to the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) region required. Responsibilities: The Deputy Director (PELE) will report directly to co-Director Aber and work closely with other members of the TIES executive team and core consultants. She is responsible for the following activities: - Principal Investigator, 3EA M&M Phase 2 (60% time)
- Provide policy, communications and scientific oversight and technical input for a mixed methods research project to iteratively develop and test a measure of children's holistic learning and development with a research-practice-policy partnership working at national scale in the Middle East
- Lead the development of a research communications portfolio focused on designing and testing strategies to ensure the rigorous, responsible and responsive uptake and use of measures and evidence
- Oversee the work of junior staff to ensure project activities are completed on time, with quality, within scope, and within budget.
- Communicate and disseminate results of project activities through convenings, conferences, peer-reviewed journal articles, policy briefs, blogs
- PELE: (20% time)
- In collaboration with co-Director Aber, manage the integrated PELE budget to make staff and fiscal resource decisions against evolving PELE objectives, contingencies, and plans
- Oversee senior team members on the management of competing priorities and demands against team goals and resources
- Plan, develop and execute fundraising strategies to reach agreed upon team goals
- Represent PELE work for internal NYU and external audiences
- TIES: (20% time)
- Via meetings, email, and review of documents, advise from a team and holistic perspective on Center-wide development, planning, policy and management issues
- Provide leadership support in TIES-wide initiatives (e.g., retreats, committees)
- Coordinate with TIES consultant to elaborate a TIES strategic communications approach and tactics
- Design/commission and disseminate communications templates, processes, graphics, and materials to support strategic communications approach
