The Division of Outcomes and Precision Medicine Research, Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, wishes to hire a full-time Researcher 4. The laboratory of Dr. Klatt performs innovative translational research on the mechanisms by which the microbiome impacts human health and implements potential interventions to improve health through the microbiome. Dr. Klatt’s research includes health outcomes and personalized medicine leveraging basic research and clinical medicine. Researcher 4 will work on projects that focus specifically on microbiome. The candidate will oversee the microbiome research studies by leading the microbiome team and supervising a technician. Researcher 4 responsibilities include coordination of microbiome studies with collaborators and reporting to the PI and senior leadership. Moreover, the Researcher 4 will promote institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community. Finally, the candidate will conduct experiments, produce, collect, organize and analyze data. The Researcerh 4 is expected to work independently as well as a team member to complete projects in a timely manner.
1. Technical Project Management and Microbiome Research Management 45% - Assists in development and design of research protocols in the microbiomic field - Oversees microbiome-related projects - Manages the microbiome team adherence based on established project plans. - Collaborates with laboratory managing staff for successful completion of projects related to microbiome - Is responsible for handling microbiome specimens and organize/conduct related workflow - Interacts with external and internal collaborators to reach laboratory-established goals - Facilitates microbiome-projects related communications between collaborators and lab members - Keeps appropriate experimental records and documentations and computer-based information repositories and database in accordance with the IRB guidelines - Works collaboratively as well as independently in order to reach lab’s goal in time - Contributes to developing advanced analytical models
2. Participates to laboratory daily activities 35% - Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and instruments. - Collaborates with other lab members in order to achieve shared goals - Collects and processes laboratory data in order to assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in the preparation of presentations and manuscripts. - Provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions
3. Commits to scientific and laboratory success 20% - Collaborates in drafting manuscripts for publication - Participates in lab meetings - Writes scientific abstracts and submits to scientific conferences - Presents data - Leads and participates in trainings - Participates and contributes to the advancement of the scientific community by training students and sharing knowledge with lab members

Required: Bachelor in Science in Cell Biology and/or Genetics or in an equivalent field of study and at least 4 years of laboratory experience in molecular biology, cellular biology and mass spectrometry, or a Masters degree and 2 years of related experience are required. Pre-requisites also include skills in handling and processing samples of different nature such as blood and other biological specimens. Excellent communication skills are expected. The candidate must show professional exposure to team work and ability to organize workflows as well as ability in collecting, processing and organizing data.
Preferred: Priority will be given to those candidates who demonstrate familiarity with DNA extractions, PCR, flow cytometry, ELISA, bacteria cultures, blood separation, liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Experience in Genomics, Microbiome and Transcriptome Analysis is highly recognized. Finally, knowledge of R and Qiime languages is preferred but not required.
