Tisch Library supports three Tufts' Schools - Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts - providing collections, expertise, and technology-rich environments to assist the Tufts community in teaching, learning, research, and the creation and dissemination of scholarship.
The Head of Digital Initiatives leads the management and preservation of Tisch Library's digital collections, ensuring that content and associated metadata is managed effectively across all library repositories, and aligning staff resources to support digital initiatives. The successful candidate will be an active individual contributor possessing the technical expertise required to manage the various modes used to create and manage content and metadata in the Tufts Digital Repository. Additionally, they will provide integrated management across the library's repositories, cultivating teamwork and collaborative relationships to ensure that the management of resources is standards-based, interoperable and discoverable, facilitating scholarship at Tufts.
The Head of Digital Initiatives works in close collaboration with the Library's Head of Metadata Services, staff in Tufts Technology Services (TTS) and Digital Collections and Archives (DCA), and other stakeholders. As a member of the Library Management Council, and the Resource Management & Repository Services (RMRS) leadership team, the position sets the vision for digital initiatives at Tisch Library and supports cross-library initiatives.
Lead the strategic direction for the Digital Initiatives Department. Build and communicate a shared vision that aligns with division, library and university priorities.
Provide the technical expertise required for the creation and management of content and metadata in the Tufts Digital Repository (TDR).
In collaboration with the Head of Metadata Services, provide a holistic approach to the management and interoperability of data and metadata in all repositories including Alma/Primo, Tufts Digital Repository, Dataverse, OCLC, HathiTrust, etc.
Hold primary responsibility for setting policies and procedures for the management of content added to the Tufts Digital Repository (TDR) and the repository for Research Data (currently Dataverse) for Tisch Library.
Develop a robust digital preservation program for the Libraries.
Foster collaborative partnerships with staff across Tufts libraries and with TTS and DCA, providing leadership and effective management of repository content.
Serve as a member of the Repository Operations Group to provide input on decisions around development of the Fedora infrastructure and enhancements of associated interfaces.
Provide metadata best practices instruction and consultation to faculty and students in support of digital scholarship projects and research data management.
Supervise members of the Digital Initiatives department, providing mentorship and fostering technical excellence and a spirit of collaboration and inclusiveness.
As a member of the Library Management Council, participate in strategic planning, library management, and priority setting. Serve as a key member of the RMRS leadership team.
Master's degree in library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience.
Demonstrated leadership ability.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with digital preservation issues, tools, standards, and best practices.
Knowledge of established and emerging national and international standards relating to metadata and classification.
Experience with HTML, XML, XSLT markup languages. Experience with scripting languages such as Ruby, SQL, Python, etc.
At least 3-5 years' experience with original metadata creation and retrospective metadata projects.
Experience with metadata schemas such as Dublin Core and/or MODS.
The ability to work with varied user groups and function effectively in a team environment and in a complex organization. Demonstrated ability to work collegially, cooperatively and flexibly. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning, and project management skills.
Self-motivated; detail-oriented. Evidence of high productivity when working both independently and in groups.
Strong user experience and customer service orientation.
Demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace.
Knowledge of trends and issues in academic libraries, scholarly communications, higher education, publishing.
Knowledge of Fedora/Samvera repository software environment strongly preferred.
Knowledge of data modelling in the Fedora/Samvera Environment.
Experience with metadata tools and standards such as MARC, AACR2, CONSER, RDA, LCSH.
Working knowledge of a foreign language.
3 years supervisory experience in an academic library.
Experience with Alma Integrated Library Management System (ILMS).
Knowledge of authority control systems, serials or digital resources cataloging.
