George Mason University is seeking a creative and energetic graphic design professional to play an important role in the visual design arm of our Office of Communications and Marketing's Creative Services team. The team's work plays a key role in building awareness and support for the university, disseminating timely and important information within the Mason community, and helping shape the Mason brand.
Reporting to the Associate Creative Director, this position will lead the design team in creating agency-quality work that upholds Mason's brand standards. This person will also function as a contributing designer, helping the team create hundreds of print and digital pieces for the university each year. The Senior Graphic Designer will set the benchmark for the quality and creativity of the team's work. In addition, this person will work closely with the Creative Services Production team to ensure all projects run smoothly and stay on schedule.

Directly manage the team's two full-time graphic designers and provide direct coaching, feedback, and support;
Help staff build their skills, and support a culture of continuous development.
Senior-Level Graphic Design:
Demonstrate exceptional skill at visualizing information and translating complex concepts into compelling and sophisticated design;
Deliver strong design concepts on time and on brand;
Show flexibility and the ability to quickly pivot in the face of shifting priorities and changing client needs.
Work closely with the production team to manage all design jobs, many with short and competing deadlines;
Assign projects and lead the design team to ensure that the creative work staff produces meets project objectives and timelines;
Provide feedback on the design team's work and suggest areas for innovation and improvement;
Ensure that the work of the team expresses the university brand at the highest standards.
Contribute to Project Strategy:
Attend and contribute to team, staff, and client meetings;
Actively engage and contribute to project brainstorming sessions and problem-solving.
Thorough understanding of print media, digital media, presentation tools, interactive communications, as well as industry best practices;
Substantial supervisory experience or equivalent, and the ability to motivate, mentor, and guide professional graphic, web, and illustration design staff;
Proven project management experience that demonstrates a consistent record of timely delivery of high-quality print and digital products;
Ability to review final artwork, color, and press-proofs to ensure adherence to established standards of print quality and color;
Decision-making skills that focus on the end results and expected outcomes;
Experience directing and mentoring designers with a variety of experience levels;
Portfolio that demonstrates talent as a senior-level designer and strategic thinker with strong conceptual and brainstorming skills;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both internal and client-facing;
A thorough understanding of print and digital design products, processes, and applications, with stellar attention to detail;
Expert level user of Adobe Creative Cloud apps (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat);
Experience with email management systems and web platforms (Drupal experience a plus);
Experience working with project management software;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office;
Understanding of UX, UI, and digital design best practices;
BA/BFA in graphic design or related field and 5 years of professional graphic design experience preferred, or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
