This position carries out internal and external communications for the cooperative with effective reputation management as the highest priority. In this role, the Communications Specialist represents the cooperative in the community; manages traditional media relations and social media; writes and coordinates production of the member magazine and employee newsletter as well as all other print, digital production and advertising; keeps the website current in content and functionality; and supports the board and staff in their requirements to effectively present information both internally to employees and externally to members and community organizations.
Essential Job Responsibilities/Duties:
Obtains directions and assignments from assigned supervisor and cooperates with them in performing the tasks assigned.
Must be able to develop a thorough knowledge of practices and software programs used for developing and maintaining websites and print publications.
Manage the development and distribution of internal and external communications materials, including but not limited to employee newsletter, advertisements, member newsletter (local Rural Missouri pages), informational handouts, website and social media pages, and member and/or public presentations.
Develop and manage strategies to educate members and the public about MEC’s mission, the cooperative business model, the Touchstone Energy brand and to uphold a positive cooperative image.
Assist in the coordination of activities and entertainment for the Annual Membership Meeting.
Assist in the coordination and management of communication and activities for MEC’s Youth Tour, Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE), and Teacher Education programs.
Assist with development of public awareness programs (for safety and efficiency).
Maintain the cooperative’s social media pages, making updates and communicating with members as necessary.
Serve as the Cooperative’s liaison in various community development capacities.
Coordinate economic development programs in conjunction with Northeast Power and evaluate and promote programs beneficial to the Cooperative.
Organize and maintain the Cooperative Connections program through Touchstone Energy.
Coordinate a Key Accounts Program and host the annual Stakeholder Luncheon.
Participate in public speaking engagements promoting the cooperative and its programs.
Position Abilities & Skills:
Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, members and the general public.
Possess the ability to read, analyze and interpret material used for publications.
Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy is required.
Ability to review, organize and deliver information timely and produce effective communications under pressure to meet internal and external deadlines.
High School Diploma or GED
Marketing/Communications Degree preferred. Related work experience may substitute for education.
Must be able to communicate with large groups and individuals internally and externally.

Majority of the duties performed inside with exception of photography for magazine and social media.
Daytime hours may fluctuate, and occasional evenings and weekends will be required to support co-op needs.
Some overnight travel and/or air travel required for conferences, training and community outreach events.
Employee must be available for on-call communication needs evenings and weekends and able respond to emergencies on-site and in person as needed.
This position is safety sensitive and employee must be able to comply with co-op’s safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Speak clearly and listen carefully; manual dexterity and visual acuity required to perform duties of this job.
The employee is required to stand, climb stairs, walk and reach with hands and arms.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
This position will report Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may be required to work hours outside normal working hours and weekends to support the cooperative during events or emergencies.
