The American Library Association (ALA) is seeking a full-time communications associate to join its team in our Public Programs Office (PPO), located in Chicago, IL. This is a grant-funded position.
ALA is the foremost national association for libraries and information centers in the world, delivering pragmatic solutions to pressing issues such as expanding economic opportunity, advancing education and learning in the global economy, as well as strengthening the public interest in information policy issues such as telecommunications, copyright, access to government information, funding, privacy and free speech. The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office (PPO) works to empower libraries to create vibrant hubs of learning, conversation and connection in communities of all types through public programs.
The communications associate implements strategies designed to promote PPO opportunities to the library field; develops content based on ALA and PPO strategic directions; and amplifies stories of library programming success with the library profession and the public.
Job duties will include executing promotional strategies for grant-funded initiatives; creating and editing content (e.g., articles, graphics, infographics) for publication on ALA websites and in ALA publications; updating web content; handling PPO social media efforts; creating e-newsletters and email campaigns; managing financial requests and communications calendars; tracking web analytics; preparing reports; and providing administrative support for communications activities. The position reports to PPO’s communications manager.
COMPENSATION: Negotiable from the low 40s; based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation and retirement annuity.

A strong candidate is curious, flexible, an independent worker and an excellent writer/editor. They should be good with details; able to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities; and comfortable conducting interviews via phone or in person. Organizational skills are key, as is comfort with having work edited. Proficiency with budgets, Microsoft Office and graphic design software (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) is required. Experience with Drupal or other content-management systems and Sprout Social is preferred, but not required.
A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required, preferably in journalism, English, creative writing, or a related field, and/or a minimum of three years relevant experience.
