About Virginia Commonwealth University and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), a premier urban, public research university in the state seeks to hire an Associate Director to join the staff of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) is a resource for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) students, faculty and staff. The primary mission of OMSA is to assist traditionally underserved and/or underrepresented student populations (i.e. race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender) through advising, support, program development, retention, mentoring and by promoting an appreciation of diversity throughout the campus community.
Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities The Associate Director of Multicultural Student Affairs coordinates and plans multicultural and intercultural programs for the university community. This position will also be charged to:
Develop and facilitate diversity and inclusion dialogues and workshops.
Teach an UNIV course that focuses on racial and ethnic identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, intersectionality and other concepts related to multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion.
Supervision of full-time and part-time staff.
Serve as a student advocate on issues, concerns, and problems related to student life, in particular related the experiences of underrepresented and marginalized students.
Assist with the hiring process and training of graduate assistants, student assistants, and volunteers.
Complete program evaluations and assist with office and division-wide assessment projects.
Serve on University and division committees and interpret University policy to students, faculty, staff, family members, and the general public.
In addition, The Associate Director must be willing to work some evenings and weekends to ensure the goals and objectives of the department and division are achieved.
Minimum Hiring Standards
Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, or related field.
Two to three years full time experience working in a Multicultural, Intercultural, Diversity and Inclusion, or related office at a higher education institution.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage several responsibilities at the same time, and resolve problems using initiative and sound judgment.
Ability to collect, interpret, and report data and to write informational materials and reports. Strong interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of student development theory and experience in its application.
Demonstrated experience in project management and/or student program planning.
Proven competency in facilitating intercultural and group dialogues.
Experience developing and facilitating diversity and inclusion presentations and workshops.
Exceptional communication (oral & written) skills.
Evidence of strong management skills.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
Preferred Hiring Standards
Three to five years full time experience working in a Multicultural, Intercultural, Diversity and Inclusion, or related office at a higher education institution.
Experience creating learning environments and opportunities for diverse student populations.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience cultivating and sustaining relationships with historically underrepresented and underserved communities.
Experience providing support and programmatic initiatives for students who identify as Latinx/Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islander, or Middle Eastern.
Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, or Hindi.
Reports To: Director, Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
