Job Summary Provide top-level network architecture, design and operational support for a wide variety of networking technologies, including routing and switching, optical networks, wireless networks, and voice over IP. The incumbent will be a self-motivated learner and take initiative in learning complex network environment that enable both administration and research.
Job Duties - Research and design high-speed data networks for the campus wide area and local area networks - Install, upgrade, maintain and troubleshoot network devices (optical equipment, switches, routers, firewalls, VPN concentrators, wireless access points, etc.) on campus - Maintain awareness with new network technologies and determine their suitability for Caltech's environment - Install, test and debug new switch and router software in accordance with established IT policies and procedures - Interact with campus Internet providers CENIC and Los Nettos, including reporting and troubleshooting upstream network issues. May also attend and participate in technical committee meetings - Independently troubleshoot network related problems on campus - Develop network maps, troubleshooting guides, and operational procedures - Participate in the design and implementation of an integrated infrastructure supporting the convergence of voice and data services - Update and maintain firewall and VPN services - Monitor system resource utilization and performance using applications such as Statseeker, RANCID and other SNMP-based tools. Recommend enhancements, upgrades and changes to achieve optimum performance levels - Interpret established IT policies and ensure compliance with Institute and department policies and procedures - Assist groups on campus with network design, implementation and operational support for private research networks - Monitor and update our internal trouble ticket system on a daily basis - Work on special projects as needed
Basic Qualifications - BS/BA degree or equivalent plus a minimum of 6 years experience as a network engineer - Demonstrated knowledge in Local Area and Wide Area network design, configuration, installation, evaluation, problem resolution and project management - Technical knowledge of data and voice network services such as wireless networks, VPN servers and firewalls, VoIP, configuration management, IP address management and network monitoring - Experience with Cisco IOS and ArubaOS - Excellent oral and written communication skills including developing, writing, and reviewing technical documents - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities - Be customer-oriented and comfortable working with a user base with widely varying computer skills and support needs - Be able to respond to off-hours incidents as necessary - Able to lift moderately heavy equipment up to 25 pounds - Some travel in-state and nationally may be required
Preferred Qualifications - Working knowledge of CWDM and DWDM optical technologies - Experience implementing Cisco DNA Center - Experience with Intent-based Networking and Cisco SDN tools - Experience implementing 10GB/40GB/100GB campus backbone - Experience implementing and maintaining ASR9K border routers - Experience implementing and maintaining ASA firewalls and VPN servers - Experience supporting high data speed/high bandwidth projects in a research environment - Cisco CCNA certification preferred - Cisco professional level certification (CCIE, CCNP, CCDP) highly desirable - Experience with Cisco CTC and CTP
