In 2019, businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford committed $100 million towards the creation of the T. Denny Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego. This gift establishes a virtual institute to study the neurobiological basis of empathy and compassion and implement training models for physician education (medical students through practicing physicians) to effectively teach the practice of compassion for self and others. With the establishment of the Institute, investments will be made towards expanding subject matter expertise through key professorships, seed funding for research and collaborative projects, and appointment of research fellows and scholars.
Additional activities include the establishment of an annual international conference, integration of new methods into the medical school curriculum, enhancing the Student-Run Free Clinic and establishment of various centers. The Director, Medical Education Integration serves as the Institute's administrator and principal advisor to the faculty Director, implements the objectives of the Institute, and is the financial steward for ensuring that the requirements outlined in the donor intent of the gift are achieved. The majority of the gift spend will occur between FY2020-FY2024. Serves as administrative Director for Medical Education Integration (MEI), a member of the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion.
Incumbent serves as MEI staff unit head, managing administrative functions and personnel of Sanford Institute's medical education integration initiative. Participates in short- and long-term strategic planning, and develops policies to promote Sanford Institute mission and objectives. Will be the point-of-contact with external partners, curriculum development and instructor utilization. Translates and enforces federal, state and university policies. Researches the internal and external implications of policy decisions and makes recommendations to academic leadership on courses of action. Works collaboratively with Medical Education leadership and staff to fulfill objective and measure outcomes.
Works closely with Student-Run Free Clinic leadership to develop pathways for students to participation in real world patient care clerkships as it relates to empathy and compassion. Strategize, plan, and lead implementation of substantial program improvements. Operational or program results can affect overall organization-wide performance and reputation. Responsible for developing professional health education programs and providing quality educational experiences for learners. As a recognized expert, leads the most complex strategizing and planning that has critical impact throughout the organization. Leads continuous program improvement efforts to increased educational quality and operational efficiency.
A Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent combination of experience and training.
Minimum of seven (7+) or more years of relevant experience, including leading the design and implementation of education programs.
Expert knowledge of a health professions and/or academic education program curriculum and requirements. Maintains a deep expertise in health professions education theory and industry best practices. Expert knowledge of internal and external policies and regulatory requirements.
Expert knowledge of current and emerging educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning practices. Expert ability to facilitate educational technology opportunities using technology-based solutions.
Advanced experience developing learning activities and facilitating the material in an academic and/or health environment.
Advanced knowledge of data management, documentation methods used in investigating and presenting findings about the program.
Expert knowledge of administrative analysis and operations research. Ability to apply knowledge and skills to develop and implement processes and systems to highly complex, unprecedented situations in administration and operations.
Superb communicator; great critical thinking and advising skills. Strong presentation skills and persuasive ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from leadership.
Excellent skills and expertise in organizational and project management. Leads teams and directs projects through from inception to completion on schedule. Excellent personal organization skills.
