Required Minimum Quals:
Bachelor's degree and related experience.
Whole slide imaging and/or digital pathology experience. Experience with laboratory informatics. Microscopy experience. Data entry and database management experience. Experience with an information management system such as LIMS. Experience with immunohistochemistry and special staining. Experience with gross trimming, embedding, and microtomy. Experience in a position with a 24-hour turnaround time or in a high volume laboratory. Training and experience that demonstrates an understanding of laboratory protocol, pathogens, etc. Computer science or information technology college level courses (or experience in a related or equivalent field). Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in histologic technique. Digital Pathology Certificate through the National Society for Histotechnology and the Digital Pathology Association.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is engaged daily in missions of service, instruction, and research. Case work processed by this laboratory includes approximately 90,000 to 95,000 cases per year submitted by veterinarians and animal owners from Iowa and surrounding states, as well as research samples from both the University and the private sector.
The primary responsibility of this position is to operate and maintain a digital imaging system which requires a digital slide imager, digital camera, computer work station, server, image display monitor, and other relevant devices. This includes assisting in selection of future instrumentation, ongoing evaluation and daily monitoring of the digital imaging process. This individual will work with this electrical, mechanical, and optical equipment daily. Effective and frequent communication with histology technicians, pathologists, information technology sources, and vendor technical support will be an essential component in this position. Considerable interactions will be necessary with these parties for a continual and efficient workflow, database management, troubleshooting, software and hardware upgrades, and image analysis.
This position must also be independently able to prepare tissues for histopathologic evaluation from animals submitted to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for research purposes and disease diagnosis. Preparation of tissue samples for research cases or diagnostic evaluation includes: trimming, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining. The technician must be skilled in performing and understanding microtomy, special staining, and immunohistochemical staining. Other duties include and are not limited to: monitoring and maintaining the laboratory and the equipment within, troubleshooting, evaluating BVDV slides, keeping records, handling formalin-fixed tissues, using histology cutting tools, modifying staining procedures, entering data and helping to train new employees and students under the supervision of a histology supervisor.Â
Additionally, this position will have quality control duties in the histology area. Quality control duties will include reviewing, updating, and creating QA/QC documentation. This documentation includes assessment of: 1) current chemical, antibody, probes, reagents, and equipment inventories, 2) laboratory procedures, and 3) training matrices with the specific aim of completing these prior to our annual audits and accreditation review. This position will also assist the lab manager with quality control and improvement of existing and validation of new procedures. These will primarily be related to QA/QC of the slide scanner and associated equipment and procedures.
To perform these essential job functions well, the successful candidate must be able to maintain consistency of output during repetitive tasks both independently and with co-workers. Strong technical knowledge and computer experience is necessary for this role. The successful candidate also must be able to maintain focus, have acute attention to detail, communicate effectively, be engaged, and have familiarity with basic laboratory techniques.Â They must possess superior organizational skills and aid in promoting a positive work environment.
