Job Summary: The Communications Specialist works with a department or area to develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of a specific department, a college and/or The University.
Additional Department Summary: The Communications Specialist for the department of University Recreation is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive communication plan as well as managing UREC’s social media presence, public relations, graphic design and/or circulation responsibilities. This includes developing and implementing strategies to engage students and other stakeholders, collaborating with staff on ideas, photographs, program information, and enhancing the department’s online presence. This position offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in the development of strategies to promote the programs, services, and facilities of University Recreation. Responsibilities include writing news stories about University Recreation events and services as well as working with Strategic Communications/External Relations regarding press releases on those events and services. Is responsible for the design and distribution of newsletters to update members and staff about available services and program offerings, and share up-to date information about statistics and programs. Other responsibilities include coordinating with Student Life Communications in designing, coordinating, and overseeing promotional materials for University Recreation. Will be responsible for creating brochures, calendars, presentations, banners, fliers, etc. and will develop and maintain a schedule for covering and providing departmental representation at events that promote UREC such as Bama Bound, Parent Orientation, and University Days. Responsible for completing required training related to UA policies/procedures and laws/regulations that create a more hospitable and respectful workplace and safer work environment.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising and one (1) year experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications; OR Master's degree Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising. Related student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated working knowledge of graphic design programs including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Ability to work with others in a team environment. Excellent project management and time management skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. Excellent ability to write for diverse audiences and communication channels. Demonstrates initiative and creativity in promotional and design efforts. Demonstrated commitment to expand multicultural knowledge, awareness, and skills as evidenced through: demonstrating self awareness; understanding and valuing others; demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities; interacting effectively with a diversity of people; fostering equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience supervising and managing interns and student workers. Experience managing social media for departments at a college or university. Experience in print and electronic media. Experience in web design, specifically the WordPress website platform. Experience in web space management. Demonstrated communications, project management, and writing, proofing, editing, and social media experience. Demonstrated knowledge of AP style, social media presence and understanding, and content management of social media accounts.
