Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a middle school visual arts teacher beginning in the 2020-21 school year. This will be a full-time (1.0 FTE), school-year faculty appointment. Lakeside School has a dynamic, creative, collaborative arts department; students take visual and performing arts at every grade level in the Middle School. We are seeking a candidate to complement the strengths of the department and to utilize their own expertise to innovate and develop new approaches. Lakeside School is re-envisioning its 5-12 curriculum to focus on competency-based learning. The successful candidate will be interested in curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, collaborative teaching, and working with highly motivated young students.
Responsibilities This position reports to the Middle School Director and the Director of Visual and Performing Arts and will join a highly collaborative department. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teach eight sections of visual arts. Classes meet once every three days in a well-equipped and maintained studio space.
Teach both 2D and 3D art (drawing, painting, printmaking and clay).
Work in a dynamic, innovative setting with another full-time visual art teacher.
Responsible for all aspects of curriculum design and studio management.
Active involvement in the school community, including participation in our experiential program (service learning, outdoor program, and cultural immersion trip).
Serve as an advisor for 8-9 students.
Attend faculty, grade level, and other scheduled meetings.
Requirements and Qualifications We are seeking a candidate who has a passion for working with middle school age students, teaching foundational skills, and has experience integrating digital art and design into traditional studio art practice. Qualifications include:
Have experience teaching middle school, high school or college students.
Have a demonstrated interest in educating adolescents ages 10-14, in or out of the classroom.
Experience and enthusiasm to teach a wide range of media and foundational skills (drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics/sculpture, and digital art/design).
Experience with kilns, etching presses, glazes, and other general art equipment.
Capacity to develop interdisciplinary projects and new pedagogical approaches in collaboration with the art teachers and the Director of Visual and Performing Arts.
Ability to manage all aspects of a visual arts classroom including maintaining art material, budget, equipment and room space.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Arts Education or related field.
Have experience instructing a diverse student population (race, gender, religion, politics, etc.).
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
