WBUR is an award-winning digital enterprise, most recently the recipient of an Online News Award for Excellence in Audio Digital Storytelling. Your role The Managing Editor for Digital News leads and manages a team of editors, producers and photographers to create essential digital journalism across WBUR’s platforms. This is a front-line role ideal for someone who thrives in a fast paced digital environment. The ME works closely with the Managing Editor for broadcast and the News Director and leads the prioritization of stories and assignments for the WBUR newsroom, implementing the strategic vision of the department daily.
The ME reports to the Executive Editor, Digital and the Managing Director, Digital, and is fully integrated into the senior leadership of the station. This person will join a dynamic digital team and will work to further grow and strengthen WBUR’s digital news presence.
The Managing Editor, Digital is responsible for ensuring that the content on wbur.org meets the editorial standards of WBUR. The Managing Editor, Digital will track digital journalism trends and innovations to uphold WBUR’s leadership in online storytelling and engagement.
Development, assignment and editing of daily news stories, features and projects on WBUR digital and broadcast platforms.
Overseeing the production and packaging of all news material for wbur.org and all of its related platforms. Expand and enhance WBUR.org's content offerings (e.g. video, interactive graphics, data visualizations, experimental storytelling). Works closely with other digital editors to ensure comprehensive coverage of stories.
Work with WBUR developers to develop new tools, platforms and design for storytelling.
Works with the Executive Editor and other senior leadership to implement digital strategy.
Work with a wide variety of stakeholders across the station in supporting other key digital and news initiatives.
Recruit, hire, manage and develop WBUR’s digital team, and encourage an open feedback communication system with staff.
Work closely on audience development and other key analytics with the Executive Editor, Digital and the Managing Director, Digital.
The ME may also occasionally write under their own byline, on longer term priority projects or daily stories.
Maintain daily communication with WBUR Newsroom and its managers, show producers, and digital staff to produce rich content for daily and long-term coverage on wbur.org.
Ensure the development and design of WBUR’s digital platforms maximize audience and engagement with WBUR content.
Help establish audience targets for wbur.org news content using traffic optimization analytics on all platforms.
