The mission of the Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) is to advance the scientific foundations for this exciting new field, and to support education and training of students who will be the new leaders in this area. Digital data have emerged as central to addressing critical societal needs and enhancing the quality of life in the coming decades. Data science touches virtually all aspects of life on our planet. At the campus level, UC San Diego already has tremendous strength in this area, ranging across all segments of the university. For this reason, the Institute has been established as an independent unit that works collaboratively with schools, divisions, departments, centers, and faculty and students across the entire campus.
The Institute is led by a Director who reports to an Oversight Committee chaired by the Chancellor. The Institute is the administrative home for the newly established undergraduate B.S. major and minor in Data Science, and will work with departments and the Academic Senate to create additional graduate programs in data science. The institute supports collaborations between researchers across campus and provides critical resources to support innovation in data science.
The project engineer at the University of California San Diego's Halicioglu Data Science Institute (HDSI) will apply advanced computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to perform highly complex research, technology and software development which involve in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting large projects of broad scope and complexities, design, develop, and optimize components/tools for major HPC/data science/CI projects, resolve complex research and technology development and integration issues, and give technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management.
In addition, they will serve as a technical lead in the research and development of multiple research projects in computational data science, enhance and develop techniques for modeling, querying and integrating scientific data including biological, social media and environmental sensor information, and work with international science collaborators to develop requirement specifications for their data science and computing tasks, and develop a research and development plan to execute the tasks. They will possess highly advanced skills, and demonstrated experience with the research, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of data science tools to large-scale applications. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and self-directed, with an ability to communicate technical information to both a technical and non-technical audience, and to function independently and proactively, as well as part of a diverse team.
Funded with a $75M endowment, the mission of HDSI is to explore the scientific foundations for the new field of data science. These foundations include both the principles, methods, and tools that will enable us to understand the nature of digital data, and also the intersections between this new field and existing disciplines of human enquiry. HDSI is a new strategic academic institute tasked with hosting and coordination of Data Science research and education activities. Among HDSI academic programs are Data Science major and minor currently with nearly 600 undergraduate students.
Advanced knowledge of HPC/data science/CI. Knowledge of advanced principles in Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
Highly advanced skills, and experience associated with one or more of the following: HPC hardware and software power and performance analysis and research, design, modification, implementation and deployment of HPC or data science or CI applications and tools of large-scale scope.
Proven experience in programming in C++ and/or Python w. Data processing libraries (such as Anaconda, Pandas, Hadoop).
Demonstrated ability to initiate research proposals and acquire funding.
Demonstrated background in signal processing, optimization, Bayesian networks, feature engineering.
In-depth experience assessing a broad spectrum of technical and research needs and demands and establish priorities, delegate and/or lead development of solutions to meet such needs.
