Thoughtful, energetic, and creative individual sought for an exciting new direction in education for the position of Director of the Capabilities Approach Program.

 

 Masters degree preferred plus a minimum of five years of educational work experience. Teaching experience is a plus. The director must demonstrate a capacity to develop, implement and direct an innovative program for girls. Must be able to think outside the box, work well with others and think iteratively. Must have excellent skills in speaking, writing, research, data analysis, technology, design and possess a strong executive skill set. Experience working with new educational programs and a strong interest in current research on girls’ development is critical. The director will work with faculty, administrators, alumnae, parents and students. Some fundraising, grant writing and reporting will be involved. This grant-supported position will be a direct report to the Head of School. The Walker’s Capabilities Approach Program is supported by a 2019 Educational Leadership grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation.

The Walker’s Capabilities Approach Program intends to disrupt gendered mindsets in a way that reimagines girls’ education. This work draws on the social justice work of economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen. At Walker’s, the capabilities represent a constellation of skills, interwoven and building on each other, with the end goal being functional mastery of each skill. The acquisition of these capabilities will help students develop resiliency as they strive to achieve functional mastery in these areas, with some capabilities requiring greater 'stretching' of limits than others. The proposed Walker’s capabilities approach program currently includes ten capabilities, divided into four themes:

 

Fluencies - digital, financial, and rhetorical

Discoveries - sustenance and sustainability, international experience and paid summer internship

Agencies - self-defense, swimming and first aid certification

Self-selected capability - a unique fluency, experience or agency chosen by each student
