The Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE), in conjunction with the Center for Ergonomics (C4E), is seeking a qualified candidate who possesses the skills described below to support faculty and students in a research and teaching setting.
Research Area Specialist Senior: $81,000-90,000
Research Area Specialist Intermediate: $68,000-77,000
The primary job function will be to support experimental studies conducted in simulated environments, both software-based (e.g., flight and driving simulators, and augmented reality) and physical environments with motion capture and force measurement (e.g., optical motion capture, inertial sensing, force transducers and load cells). The candidate will be working with faculty and students on research in areas including autonomous vehicles, aviation, health, mobility and robotics.
This will include the following responsibilities:
• Design and develop simulation environments, both software-based and physical mockups.
• Develop software for graphical user interfaces and communication protocols for data acquisition to monitor signals and implement algorithms.
• Support hardware and software selection and procurement, oversee installation and maintenance, and develop and implement safe use policies and procedures.
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, computer science, or related technical disciplines and at least 2 years of experience related to engineering lab work in a research setting.
• Proficiency in programming languages/operating systems such as: C++, LabView, Matlab, ROS
• Proficiency in CAD, instrumentation electronics, sensors, data acquisition systems and microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Rasberry Pi), signal processing.
• Ability to assess competing priorities, manage workflow and meet operational deadlines with minimal on-site supervision.
• Proven ability to work independently, function as a member of a team, and build effective working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work on open-ended problems and requirement definition.
Minimum proficiency in metal machining
Demonstrated research and project management skills and experience
Knowledge of University policies and procedures
Willingness to learn new software languages and packages as needed
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
