We are seeking a Director of Business Operations and Pricing in our Seattle office. This is an exempt, full time opportunity for an experienced, energetic, dynamic, and hands-on leader with a passion for employee development. This role will supervise two direct reports.
This position reports to the Chief Operation Officer, is a member of the Director Team, and works in close partnership with the President, Vice President, Practice Team Leads, and client relationship attorneys.
Lead a team of two operations and pricing professionals. Advance the current capabilities of the team through education, business process improvements, and technology.
Serve as the primary resource to provide coaching, advice, and support to all internal parties, both attorneys and professional staff, involved in pricing proposals, RFPs, rate negotiations, and all non-standard fee structures and client agreements.
Implement and leverage tools to efficiently analyze data across all matter types to support attorneys in the development of reliable budget estimates.
Lead the development of creative pricing solutions designed around maximizing value for our clients, including production of complex reporting required by internal and external clients for individual matters or portfolios of client work.
Develop and promote forward-thinking economic models, including staffing and services provided, of new business opportunities, in collaboration with colleagues in practice and industry team leadership and the marketing department.
Oversee the internal approval process for rate discounting and alternative fee arrangements based on firm policies and procedures.
Partner with the finance department to collect and evaluate market information on hourly rates for all timekeeper groups. Direct the annual process of setting billing rates and rate cards for timekeeper groups as applicable.
Develop and implement procedures for annual review of non-standard rate or other pricing agreements on active matters to ensure we remain current and compliant with outside counsel guidelines.
Maintain knowledge of current market trends with particular focus on alternative fee structures and client value programs.
In partnership with the finance department, add material summary analysis and supplementation to monthly financial and production reporting to practice and industry teams and other stakeholders.
Develop metrics and reporting tools to clearly illustrate trends and analysis of pricing performance.
Track and report on departmental key results and other operational metrics.
Regularly brief firm leadership on major legal operations initiatives and opportunities for continued improvement.
Promote best practices across team, department and firm that increase client value and revenue growth.
Occasional travel to other firm offices as well as for conferences and training events as needed.
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or other related field
At least ten years of progressive experience in business operations, financial analysis, pricing, or other related field
Advanced knowledge working with MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint
Excellent relationship development and management skills at all levels
Experience engaging with external clients, sometimes as a primary contact, and valued business partners
Highly developed multi-tasking and team and project management skills
Master of Business Administration or other related graduate degree preferred
Legal or Professional Services industry experience preferred
Ability to understand and communicate data effectively to non-technical stakeholders. This includes the ability to find, clean, and structure data, to analyze data, to apply subject matter expertise and functional knowledge to analysis, to design visual presentations and templates, and to develop and tell stories from data and visuals.
Ability to create a vision and communicate it clearly to key stakeholders and decision makers.
Ability to understand the parts of Firm business and their interrelationships including skill in understanding the industry, competition, and expected future developments and challenges, the business's competitive strengths and weaknesses, opportunities to grow the business and reduce operating costs; and awareness of the environment for opportunities.
Ability to influence others, including the ability to sell, to develop and maintain working relationships, and deliver results and/or expertise in a professional manner.
