Job PurposeReporting to the Director of Media Relations and News, the Communications Strategist role is responsible for strong writing, editing and web skills, adept at communicating with diverse audiences across multiple platforms. The Communications Strategist will collaborate with internal and external entities to create accurate, engaging information about Towson University is presented creatively and appropriately to a wide-ranging audience. Clients include, but are not limited to, the College of Business and Economics, the College of Health Professions and the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics.
The Communications Strategist will work to develop and implement the communications goals for both the university and its smaller components. Specific tasks may include contributing to the university’s online newsroom with stories that highlight Towson University's priorities; writing in-depth feature stories for its website, TU Magazine and social media channels; and generating content for publications on an as-needed basis.
The Communications Strategist will also serve campus clients by developing and implementing communications plans; guiding clients to make informed, effective decisions that enhance and unify their electronic, social media and print communications; working with divisional departments to achieve client needs; and strategizing with a divisional department representative to aid in the content production, design and distribution of all client web, print and digital material—including magazines, brochures, web pages, advertising, videos and more—to ensure quality, accuracy and brand consistency.
The Communications Strategist will work with staff from other divisions (College of Business and Economics, College of Health Professions, Fisher College of Science and Mathematics) to coordinate and develop university publications for campus-wide audiences, including TU By the Numbers, Points of Pride and all-campus compliance notifications (Clery, Annual Consumer Information Notice).
The Communications Strategist will work closely with key institution-wide offices (Facilities and Planning, Inclusion and Institutional Equity, Human Resources, Office of General Counsel, International Initiatives and Honors College) to offer communications strategy, guidance and direction order to disseminate important information to staff, faculty and/or students.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field, and at least three years of related professional experience in communications and public relations. The selected candidate must have very strong writing and editing skills across print and web platforms, and experience in social media communications on behalf of an institution. Candidate must have exceptional organization and project management skills, and be comfortable working both autonomously and as part of a cohesive team. Fluency in AP style, WordPress, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and HTML a plus. Experience in higher education communications preferred.
