Berkeley Lab's Information Technology (IT) Division has an opening for a dedicated, creative, Network Engineer to join our team. Berkeley Lab has many unique networking needs requiring someone who understands the big picture and can translate that into detailed configurations. We are looking for applicants at different levels, from junior to senior level. Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Beneath all the amazing science done at Berkeley Lab is our network. Supercomputers, particle accelerators, and gamma ray detectors all generate massive streams of data. That data often has to be sent, in real-time, all over the world. Our networking group is busy staying in front of the leading edge of high-performance networking.
This position will be part of a collegial team of capable and knowledgeable engineers. You will work as a Network Engineer on the Berkeley Lab campus network team to design, build, maintain, and operate high-speed wired and wireless networking to over 20,000 endpoints supporting the scientific and operational staff of the laboratory. We use our network for ordinary traffic like most businesses, but we also use it to deliver the elephant data flows now common in science research. Our environment is both cutting edge and dedicated to the pursuit of science. This position will be responsible for reacting to current problems, planning future expansions, and keeping the network on the leading edge of technology.
What You Will Do:
Design, install, analyze, and troubleshoot Berkeley Lab's wired and wireless networks.
Provide response to support calls and service request incidents.
Serve as a point of contact in the group for network incidents and resolve escalated support calls as needed.
Work with researchers, scientists, laboratory staff, vendors, and upstream network providers to solve users' network performance issues and design networks to make scientists more productive.
Create and maintain tools used to manage, monitor and troubleshoot LBLnet.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to complete ad-hoc projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Troubleshoot and solve complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
Provide technical leadership in:
Network project coordination and management.
FreeBSD and Linux systems administration supporting DNS, DHCP, network monitoring, and network management systems and services.
Programming and scripting supporting network monitoring, management, and network customer self-service applications.
Site network design and troubleshooting.
What is Required:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent training/experience and a minimum of 2 years of IP networking experience with both LAN and WAN environments or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants with more experience will be considered for more senior level positions.
Experience with the installation, operation, and testing of network infrastructure components, including switches, routers, and firewalls.
Advanced knowledge of network technologies, protocols, and standards such as Ethernet, VLANs, IPv4, IPv6, ARP, TCP, UDP, Spanning Tree, LACP, and LLDP.
Demonstrated ability to conduct network diagnostic tests and analyze the results using test equipment and computer systems at an advanced level.
Ability to design, develop and implement complex solutions consistent with user requirements and established in consultation with designated technical expert(s) and/or supervisor.
Experience with switch and router configuration; expert-level knowledge in at least one common vendor, preferably Arista, Cisco, or Juniper.
Experience with a UNIX command line environment.
An understanding of local and wide area network topologies, technologies and telecommunications concepts.
A commitment to ongoing self-education.
Critical thinking, resource planning, project management,troubleshooting, and communications skills.
Working knowledge of Ethernet, VLANs, IPv4, ARP, TCP, UDP, Spanning Tree, LACP, and LLDP.
Demonstrated ability to conduct network diagnostic tests and analyze the results using test equipment and computer systems.

What We Desire:
Experience leading a project, taking a lead role in designing, implementing and/or administering systems, or providing direction to projects in the context of technical designs.
Experience with TIA/EIA-568B/C cabling standards.
Experience with the installation, operation, and testing of wireless access points and network monitoring systems.
Experience maintaining DNS and DNSSEC.
Experience with IPv6 in a production environment.
Experience with IP network services such as MPLS, IP multicast and QoS.
Experience with routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, or ISIS.
Experience configuring and managing wireless network controllers.
Experience configuring, managing, and using network management software packages (open source and/or commercial).
Working knowledge of SNMP and MIB structure.
Familiarity with designing and implementing network security systems including firewalls and VPN's.
Experience with programming in Perl, Python, C, C++, and/or shell scripts.
Experience with basic configuration of Windows and Macintosh operating systems and Linux/UNIX variants, especially FreeBSD.
Certifications in Arista, Aruba, Cisco, and/or Juniper.

This is a full-time 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
