The College: The B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences is the largest of RITs nine colleges, and has an enrollment of over 3,100 undergraduate students and 850 graduate students. The college, with over 140 faculty members, is housed in a modern facility equipped with numerous teaching and research laboratories. The college is home to the departments of Computer Science, Computing Security, School of Information, Software Engineering, the School of Interactive Games and Media and a college-wide Ph.D. program, providing many opportunities for cooperation and research collaboration within and beyond the college.
The Department: The Department of Software Engineering offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in software engineering with current total enrollment of roughly 600 students. The department is launching a new Master of Science degree in Data Science starting in the August 2019. The undergraduate program has been accredited by ABET since 2001.
Detailed Job Description
As a part of growing the funded research in both Software Engineering and the new Global Cybersecurity Institute, we need technical staff capable of architecting, designing and developing high complex state of the art software systems utilizing modern cloud, mobile and artificial intelligence technologies. The ideal candidate will provide full stack as well as devops capabilities for their projects.
This staff member will work closely with faculty to both pursue new research awards and to deliver research results by providing their expertise in software engineering and complex software system project management. On a day-to-day basis they will design, develop, and lead the development of software and applications in R&D projects as well as appropriate participate in formulating new proposals. This include directing and participating in programming activities, monitoring, and evaluating system performance, and designing and implementing new programs and features. The person in this position will need to be capable of complex multi-tasking, as they will support multiple funded research projects across Software Engineering and GCI.
This is a new strategic capability necessary to support research grant growth with mission oriented funding agencies beyond the NSF such as DARPA, DHS etc
Software architecture design for large R&D projects.
Designing and developing R&D software systems using scientific analysis methods and mathematical models to predict and measure outcomes and design consequences.
Directing system testing and validation procedures.
Directing software programming and documentation development.
Representing the team in external meetings.
Meeting with the sponsors, for project status reports.
Working with the sponsors on technical issues including software system design and maintenance.
Consulting with engineering staff to evaluate software and develop specifications and periodic project performance reports.
Participate in formulating and developing new research proposals leveraging their expertise in software development
Manages software research projects:
Serves as designated project lead
Determines goals, objectives, and long term solutions
Leads software architecture design for large R&D projects
Directs system testing and validation procedures
Directs software programming and documentation development
Organizes and leads teams
Monitor/coordinate progress and ensuring report and deliverable deadlines are met
Manages project scope, schedule, and may manage resources
Serves as technical expert for developing and deploying R&D software systems using scientific analysis methods and mathematical models to predict and measure outcomes and design consequences. Identifies problems and related technical issues leading to long-term, generic solutions; identifies and implements technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs.
Serves as primary contact and manages sponsor communications:
Works with sponsor/client to define and design objectives
Leads reporting and relationship with sponsors. Meets with the sponsors to present the project status reports and address sponsors questions and concerns.
Working with the sponsors on technical issues including software system design and maintenance.
May supervise research staff and/or students. Monitors the work of others and redirects efforts to achieve task/project objectives or enhance quality. Mentors junior staff in development of technical, project and business development skills.
Leads and makes significant contributions to technical papers, presentations, proposals, reports, and new methodologies:
Actively pursues new grant or project opportunities. Maintains external research relationships to identify and develop new funding sources
Leads the creation of technical reports.
Consults with engineering staff to evaluate software and develop specifications and periodic project performance reports.
Identifies, designs, and implements new programs and features

Required Minimum Qualifications
9+ years of experience in working on industrial scale systems and software production environment.
Demonstrated project management ability (required). This includes organizing and leading teams, working with sponsor/client to define and design objectives, monitor/coordinate progress and ensuring report and deliverable deadlines are met, coordinating or supervising work of other staff, managing project scope, schedule, and may manage resources,
Demonstrated ability to lead reporting and communications with sponsors
Demonstrated ability to lead creation of technical papers, publications, presentations, project/grant proposals, or the like.
