The Communication Studies Program in the Department of Speech, Communication, and Theatre Arts at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of The City University of New York invites applications for TWO full-time tenure-track Instructor, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor positions starting in Fall 2020, one for an Interpersonal Communication Specialist and the other for a Communication Studies Generalist.
The Department of Speech, Communication, and Theatre Arts houses Communication Studies and Theatre majors; we also co-house the interdisciplinary Gender & Women's Studies major with the Department of Social Sciences. In addition to offering over 200 sections of the basic public speaking course (SPE100/SPE102) every semester for both native and non-native speakers of English, the department offers COM (Communication Studies) courses such as Introduction to Communication Studies, Digital Communication and Culture, Interpersonal Communication, The Mass Media, Conflict Resolution, Intercultural Communication, Small Group Communication, and Gender and Communication, and Introduction to Rhetoric and Public Address as well as SPE (Speech Communication) courses such as Advanced Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation, and Voice and Articulation.
With around 400 majors, the Communication Studies Program in the Department of Speech, Communication, and Theatre Arts is undergoing a process of growth/renewal and is seeking two new full-time tenure-track faculty who will contribute to this process through teaching, research and publication, as well as departmental and college service. More specifically, the program is looking for an Interpersonal Communication Specialist who has been teaching and publishing in the area of Interpersonal Communication and a Communication Studies Generalist who has been teaching and publishing in any of the communication studies related areas. These two new faculty will be expected to teach [in fully-online, hybrid, and/or in-person format(s)] our SPE100/SPE102 basic public speaking courses as well as other COM and SPE courses based on our program's needs. For tenure and promotion, other than significant achievement in teaching and pedagogy as well as active service and participation in departmental and college-wide activities, research and peer-reviewed publication are required. The qualified candidate must also be able to work in either the Day or Evening/Weekend, as needed by the Department.
For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor:
Ph.D. in Communication Studies or related area (for appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor Rank) or ABD in Communication Studies or related area with the expectation of completing their Ph.D. within five years (for appointment at the Instructor Rank*)
A record of teaching, researching, and publishing on interpersonal communication related topics/issues (for the Interpersonal Communication Specialist position) or on any communication studies related topics/issues (for the Communication Studies Generalist position)
Master's degree in area(s) of expertise, and/or active progress toward a Doctorate, or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

experience teaching non-traditional urban college students through culturally sustaining/responsive pedagogical strategies.
*Candidates appointed in the Instructor title are eligible for five (5) annual appointments; in order to continue employment, instructors must obtain a Ph.D. within five years and be appointed to a professorial title (i.e., Assistant Professor).
