The Library Director at The Derryfield School creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for the school’s community where resources can be accessed, where members of the community can collaborate, and where students can be instructed in an efficient, ethical and legal use of information.
This candidate will be able to work independently while also working collaboratively as a member of a team. She or he will possess strong written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational skills. Prior library experience is a plus. This is a salaried, 40 hours a week minimum, year-round position with an excellent benefits package.
Develop with faculty a 6-12 scope and sequence, creating and evaluating activities, lessons, and assessments, for media literacy and academic research.
Provide instruction to students in finding the best digital and print information and media for the particular purpose defined by the individual.
Network with teachers to develop activities which stress effective research strategies.
Meet with teachers to plan research projects, according to class needs.
Develop and co-teach media literacy units with teachers in various departments including skills such as critical thinking; close reading; evaluation of resources, including graphs and images; understanding of logical fallacies and false news; and how to be an ethical social media citizen.
*Instruct and serve as a resource on copyright issues and ethical use of various resources.
Teach information technology skills to all students so that all graduates will be able to locate, evaluate, and manage information resources and technology.
Promote reading, in any format, as a life-long habit.
Support the school’s Project-Based Learning initiatives and the one-to-one device program.
Participate in the school’s professional development programs.
Create a virtual and physical library space that is user-centered and accessible.
Select materials and technology which supports the school’s educational philosophy and curriculum. Create and organize a carefully curated collection of both digital and physical resources, including material that will encourage personal reading and intellectual curiosity, in accordance with the official Materials Selection Policy adopted by the Board of Trustees.
Develop short and long-range goals to guide the development of the library program.
Promote a love of reading through various programming initiatives. Promote the library media program, services, and its materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff, and the community.
Prepare articles and reports highlighting all aspects of the library program.
Oversee the library volunteers and their day-to-day tasks.
Prepare and oversee a library media program budget which will provide the best possible library program for the Derryfield School.
