The Stanford Research Computing Center (SRCC) is seeking outstanding applicants for the position of Research Data Architect & Consultant. Based in Polya Hall on the Stanford campus, you will join a dynamic and growing team of technology specialists supporting the computational and data needs of Stanford's research community. This role will specifically focus on large-scale research databases and datasets to be analyzed using local and cloud platforms designed for high-risk data. You will provide expert consultation and collaboration regarding the use of Stanford's high risk Big Data resources and effective data management at scale. In addition, you will contribute substantially to the development of SRCC guidelines, standards and processes to ensure that researcher workflows and practices around big data are consistent with University privacy and information security guidelines and with data use agreements and contracts. The position offers the opportunity to work with world-class researchers and outstanding partner technology teams in University IT, Stanford Medicine, and in other units across the campus.
The hiring range for this position is $125,000 - $140,000.
The successful candidate will be someone who:
Has knowledge of key data structure, algorithms and techniques relevant to systems that support high volume or high variety research datasets (including data mining, common data formats, NLP, data retrieval)
Is experienced with relational, NoSQL, or other databases both traditional and cloud-based (for example, BigQuery)
Isn't daunted by complex database provisioning, optimization and analysis
Understands Stanford's Minimum Security standards as well as data privacy standards and applicable laws when working with high risk data
Has experience deploying, supporting and analyzing large-scale research datasets on multiple platforms
Thrives when working in an academic environment
Is passionate about both research and data, and is driven by challenge and intellectual curiosity
Is self-motivated to learn, sometimes on your own time
Actually enjoys working with both novice and expert end-users
Is extremely detail-oriented, documents well, and understands the importance of documentation
Understands the need to ensure the usability of systems from the end-users' perspectives
The SRCC is jointly sponsored by University IT (UIT) and the Office of the Dean of Research. The SRCC team of 18 cyberinfrastructure professionals offers research computing platforms, consultation, tool and software development, system engineering, and system administration in support of computational and data-intensive research across the Stanford campus.
Work closely with faculty, scientific staff, IT professionals and research project managers to understand their data requirements for existing and future projects involving big data
Ensure that researcher workflows and practices around big data are consistent with University Privacy and Information Security guidelines
Develop, test, implement and maintain data management applications. Identify optimization opportunities.
Contribute substantially to the development of guidelines, standards, and processes to ensure data quality, integrity and security of data and systems, appropriate to risk
Work with IT professionals and data owners to understand the types of data collected or purchased in various databases and data warehouses or data commons
Research and suggest new toolsets and methods to improve data ingest, storage and access
Provide expert consultation and collaboration regarding use of Stanford's high risk Big Data resources
Troubleshoot highly complex problems for which the analysis and resolution require extensive knowledge of many diverse components of Stanford's Big Data research platform
Facilitate workshops and demonstrations of effective use and management of datasets and Big Data analysis resources

Bachelor's degree in a scientific or analytic field and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
