Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County has an exciting opportunity for a Hidden Valley 4-H Camp Manager. The mission of Hidden Valley 4-H Camp is to provide a natural rustic environment where groups, under the guidance of positive role models utilizing a positive youth development approach take part in a personal growth experience that emphasizes community building, positive social interactions, environmental awareness, skill building, and having fun.
* Bachelor's Degree * At least 25 years of age. (according to ACA guidance) * Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English. * Current CPR and First Aid certifications. (Or the ability to obtain). * Youth camping administrative experience. * Valid drivers' license, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required. * Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. * Must have a visa for work in the USA if from another country. CCE Schuyler cannot sponsor Visas for this position * Must have the visual, auditory and physical ability and endurance to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid, physical restraint, or physical activity (i.e. running). * Must have the ability to reside on-site for seven (8weeks of the traditional summer camp season, and conduct the equivalent of three (3) weeks of preparation throughout the winter/spring months. * Must have initiative, reliability and dependability. * Ability to plan, organize, implement and teach informal educational programs. * Ability to be flexible, enthusiastic, have a sense of humor, and exercise patience and self-control. * Ability to participate in professional team efforts. * Ability to work with people of diverse ages, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds. * Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual means. * Ability to communicate and train staff, counselors and campers on a variety of topics. * Ability to provide appropriate supervisory oversight to enforce safety regulations, emergency procedures and behavior management for campers and staff as needed. * Ability to observe and evaluate (written and oral) counselors and program. * Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, transverse uneven surfaces with or without reasonable accommodation. * Ability to work long hours, in an outdoor setting, requiring regular physical activity as well as standing and sitting for long periods. * Experience managing staff and creating age appropriate lesson plans in a wide range of instructional areas such as physical education, art, theatre and academic enrichment. * Demonstrated experience in effective supervision and management with ability to supervise, train and motivate staff of all ages and levels of experience. * Ability to interact with camp families and the general public in a professional manner at all times.
* Coursework in education and/or camping. * Previous training or coursework with Positive Youth Development. * At least two (2) years of administrative and/or supervisory experience in an organized camp. * Knowledge of the American Camp Association guidelines and standards. * Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organization. * Knowledge of NYS Health Department regulations. * Current American Red Cross certification in First Aid / CPR / AED and/or EMT or Ability to obtain Advanced First Aid & CPR/AED certifications, and other certifications that may become required for the position as needed to meet County and New York State youth camp standards. * Excellent understanding of Environmental/Conservation/ Outdoor Recreation Education. * Strong teaching skills and group facilitation skills.
Program Development - 5% * Assist with coordination of the camp program direction to create educational programs for Hidden Valley 4-H Camp. * Structure programs to meet the needs of diverse Hidden Valley 4-H Camp program participants * Assist in the design of developmentally appropriate leadership training programs for various ages, maturity levels and skills, including the Counselor in Training program. * Assist in the development of camper activities and classes. * Develop routines, schedules, and procedures for daily camp operation.
Program Evaluation - 5% * Implement program evaluation of day and residential program offerings. * Assist in the process of analyzing program data, and based on that analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.
Administrative Direction - 5% * Provide leadership to the planning of the delivery of camp educational programs in order to efficiently meet established program goals. * Develop educational strategies to meet the needs of youth/campers and special interest groups. * Assist with providing leadership for the development of camp staffing plans that support seasonal educational programming efforts. * Assist with fundraising efforts in coordination with the Issue Leader during off season or camp season as needed.
Administrative Management - 60% * Manage and oversee the day to day operations the summer resident and day camp including food service, program, business, camper and staff supervision, and health care. * Provide leadership, supervision, direction, and evaluation to seasonal camp staff providing constructive feedback and overall performance management fostering the development of confidence and competence in program delivery and interaction with diverse audiences. Support the staff in maintaining inclusivity in all camp activities and functions. * Effectively allocate human resources to accomplish program objective based on established staffing plan. * Ensure volunteer direction and management procedures are followed according to established Volunteer Involvement Policy (VIP) by providing guidance, leadership and resources for volunteers and volunteer leaders including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, evaluation, and management. * Assist in identifying and recommending program needs. * Work with the Camp Registrar and Issue Leader to develop registration check-in process that is timely and efficient for camper families * Supervise and direct the work of support staff resolving issues and conflicts that may arise seeking the guidance and support from the Issue Leader. * Provide complex administrative tasks in guiding the implementation of the program budget, to include: providing management and oversight of the budget (operating income and expenses) to ensure the program is within established parameters. * Manage allocation of financial resources to accomplish Hidden Valley 4-H Camp programming objectives. * Provide management and oversight of all aspects of health, safety, and risk management of all programs and related facilities for Hidden Valley 4-H Camp. * Assist leadership team and staff with effectively handling inappropriate behavior and recognizing hazard situations. * Assist with communication to parents/guardians of homesick, sick, or injured campers as well as communication regarding camper behavior issues as necessary. * Maintain open but professional communication with staff, parents, and campers. * Assist with enforcing all policies and procedures. * Create, update and facilitate oversight of daily schedule along with special events and rainy days. * Assist in maintaining/updating and following the Department of Health Camp Safety Plan to ensure that it is in compliance with local and state regulations governing children's camps. * Manage camp store. * Provide input and guidance to the Association Issue Leader and Maintenance Staff in order to maintain site safety. * Provide management support to the Camp Health Director as needed. * Assist the Camp Registrar and Issue Leader with the development of forms for Camp Data Management system that are in compliance with federal reporting guidelines * Work with the CCE Finance Manager to ensure that all camp forms and payments are received (15) business days prior to camp start
Administrative Coordination/Operation - 20% * Act as point of contact and knowledgeable liaison for campers, parents, seasonal and year-round camp staff, Association staff and Human Resources. Respond to general requests for information about camp programs/activities, paperwork/registration requirements for campers, seasonal employment, etc. * Assist with, or deliver, educational "train the trainer" programming to seasonal camp staff and volunteers, including but not limited to pre-season and in-service trainings, workshops, individual consultations, electronic and digital media presentations. * Train, motivate, support, share insights and ideas with, and supervise staff; support and connect with campers; behave as an appropriate positive role model in all camp activities. * Coordinate and implement efficient weekly on-site registration check-in and check-out processes. * Prepare and maintain camp data management program which includes camper registration, correspondence, class/activity scheduling, cabin assignments, confirmations and billings. * Prepare camp reports and records including camper registration lists, health forms, emergency contact, camper cards and weekly statistics. * Maintain communication with families in order to effectively manage program to meet needs of individual participants. * Organize and coordinate activities related to Hidden Valley 4-H Camp Programming. * Coordinate, compile and organize existing program resources and program materials. * Maintain effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts. * Coordinate employment, training and scheduling of Hidden Valley 4-H Camp Program staff. * Implement established program schedule at Hidden Valley 4-H Camp. * Assist Executive Director and Issue Leader with coordination and preparation for annual inspections and open house. * Assist with completion of the hiring spreadsheet to ensure entry into Workday is accurate. * Coordinate, schedule, and facilitate seasonal camp staff meetings. * Collect camp program evaluations weekly and program needs assessment data based on exit surveys and other existing tools. * Enter camp data (gender, race, ethnicity and activity) into the 4-H Federal reporting system. * Represent Hidden Valley 4-H Camp and Cornell Cooperative Extension at community functions, meetings or events as appropriate. * Prepare for the opening of the season including inventory of equipment and educational materials as well as completing requisition forms for new materials. * Keep in direct communication with the Issue Leader regarding camper and staff activities. * Transport self, program participants and/or program materials and resources as necessary as part of performing position responsibilities. * Coordinate with the Watkins Glen State Park staff the opening and closing of camp along with communication regarding facilities throughout the camping season * Ensure complete confidentiality of any sensitive information regarding all campers and staff at all times. * Prepare and submit expense reports, mileage reports, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. * Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as requested.
Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5% * In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities. * Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and trainings as scheduled/required. * Pursue personal growth through expanding personal knowledge of the total organization and through updating techniques and technical skills relating to the position. * Maintain a clean, professional, well-groomed appearance while on duty keeping in compliance with the Association and Camp Dress Code Policy at all times. * Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions. * Support the association to maintain a safe working environment on and off camp property * Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard. * Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries, maintain a safe environment, and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified. * Monitor policies and practices that reduce risk and promote health and safety for campers and camp staff. * Assist Supervisor with development of camp crisis management plan and emergency management procedures. * Manage effective emergency/crisis response to issues and communicate to applicable staff as needed. * Secure necessary operating permits for Camp from agencies including the NYS Department of Health. * Meet quality standards of and maintain accreditation from the American Camp Association. * Assist Executive Director and Issue Leader with maintaining external relationships with insurer; local police, fire and emergency medical units; inspectors and compliance officers on issues of health and safety.
