EHS Chemical Inventory Specialist - Environmental Health & Safety 13785
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) unit of the Division of Facilities and Services is seeking applications for an EHS Chemical Inventory Specialist (Environmental Health & Safety Specialist) position. Supporting West Virginia University's Health Sciences Center, this position will d esign, develop policies, implement, and manage a University-wide chemical inventory program, which include working with key campus stakeholders on the essential features of the chemical inventory system, working with a selected vendor on identifying system requirements, and developing an implementation plan. This position requires the ability to manage a complex program while working collaboratively with stakeholders having diverse interests.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Be responsible for the administration of institutional policies with minimal supervision related to chemical inventory control which may include; receiving, handling, inventory control, and timely distribution of chemicals and reagents to laboratories throughout all WVU campus locations. Participate in physical chemical inventory.
Receive and handle all chemicals, biologicals and radiological materials by acknowledging receipt, barcoding at the container level, and recording into the University's inventory control database.
Verify electronic records of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all newly procured items that require SDS. Provide a hard copy SDS with each chemical delivery.
Log chemicals with expiration dates into the online inventory system identifying the 'use by' or expiration date. Upon delivery of chemical inform the end user of the expiration requirement.
Repackage chemical container, deliver to appropriate laboratory. Scan the container into the online chemical inventory system for the end destination/user (building and room).
Meet delivery and proper storage requirements, e.g. time sensitive deliveries or perishable items. Ensure all chemicals are delivered in accordance with University protocols, and not stored at the receiving area.
Prepare required inventory, regulatory and other paperwork; maintain records and files.
Provide program services, leadership, and options for decision making to institutional groups required to comply with program policies.
Monitor, on a continuous basis, the activities and operations necessary for compliance, identify deficiencies, and provide written corrective measures to ensure program efficiency and effectiveness.
Set goals to reduce incidents and abate hazards in collaboration with administrators, managers, Chemical Hygiene Officers, faculty, PI's, etc.
Remain current with chemical inventory issues to assure WVU maintains is aware of emerging regulatory issues.
Administer long-term strategies developed to reduce the adverse impact of environmental health and safety demands upon human and financial resources of the institution.
Network with other professionals in local, state, federal, industrial, and academic institutions to benchmark programs to evaluate best practices.
Respond to institutional emergencies.
Assist in developing and conducting educational and informational programs that enhance employee health and safety, property preservation and protection of the environment.
Provide support and assistance to the Hazardous Materials and Laboratory Safety related programs.
Prepare written and verbal reports, conducts investigations and special projects.
Responsible for monitoring occupational, chemical, and biological safety conditions in campus facilities by performing periodic physical surveys, inspections and reviews.
Identify unsafe conditions and hazardous situations in work environments, including laboratories; provide recommendations for mitigation, communication improvement needs and follow-up to ensure corrective action has occurred.
Act where imminent dangers to life, health, or property are involved.
Interact with various institutional staff, administrative offices, researchers, service providers and regulatory agencies as required.
Assist in the operation of all other Environmental Health and Safety programs as assigned.
Attend conferences, professional development and training as needed and recommended by supervision.
Available to respond to institutional emergencies on a 24-hour basis, as needed. Response may require participation in remedial or containment efforts.
At the request of the Executive Director or Associate Director of EHS, employee may assist in the operation or get engaged in activities at other campus or farm locations based on department needs and specific area of responsibility.
Assist in the operation of other Environmental Health and Safety programs and perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Project Management or a related field or equivalent experience is required.
Master's degree in one of the above areas is preferred.
At least four (4) years of d irectly related professional experience in environmental health and safety programs including laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, hazardous materials, biological safety, chemical receiving/inventory and or project management.
Valid driver's license - Incumbent must drive throughout the state and beyond to perform assigned tasks.
National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) ICS-100 and IS-700 certification required within one year in order to respond to emergency situations in an effective capacity.
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training certificate preferred
DOT Hazardous Materials shipping training certificate preferred
IATA Dangerous Goods preferred
Demonstrated ability to operate a hand truck, pallet jack or other basic warehouse equipment.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to a wide variety of work environments.
Demonstrated ability to wear proper PPE, including, but not limited to, respiratory protection.
