The Senior Prospect Research Analyst, Principal Gifts is a vital member of the Data & Analytics team and an information professional responsible for conducting in-depth biographical and financial research, and assessing individual wealth and philanthropic capacity using a variety of sources and advanced techniques. This position will primarily research and write briefings for Georgetown University's highest level prospective donors. As a member of the Data & Analytics Group, this position produces thorough, well-written reports and briefing material for use by executive staff, other University leaders and volunteers, and discovers and interprets assets to accurately evaluate philanthropic capacity. In addition to providing prospect research that enhances the top levels of Georgetown University's pool of prospective individual donors, the Senior Prospect Research Analyst, Principal Gifts also plays a key role in curating and maintaining accurate and useful prospect data for the division. This position will interact with colleagues at all levels, including program managers and OA executive staff.
The Senior Prospect Research Analyst, Principal Gifts will report to the Director of Prospect Research and will have duties that include, but are not limited to the following:
Research and Writing
Conduct in-depth research to produce detailed profiles on the university's top individual donors and prospective donors.
Conduct detailed biographical, business, and financial research on individuals and their related organizations using online resources, internal files, and other sources.
Gain and maintain proficiency in the use of all available internal and external information resources, including the GU360 database (Georgetown's alumni database).
Write narrative profiles and other briefing materials for use by executive leadership, other University staff, and volunteers.
Exercise appropriate judgement and discretion in gathering facts and formulating analysis.
Proofread, edit, and prepare written products to ensure consistent clarity and integrity.
Wealth and Asset Assessment
Find and interpret wealth/financial information to assess an individual's philanthropic gift capacity.
Identify, analyze, and accurately interpret a variety of financial documents and information, including SEC documents, charitable foundation filings, real estate and financial records, private company records, and annual/financial reports.
Search and monitor news and other online sources to obtain information regarding philanthropic gifts to other organizations, and financial, family, or life events that may affect an individual's ability or propensity to support Georgetown University.
Assign, update, or confirm appropriate capacity levels on new or existing prospects.
Compile accurate summaries of gift capacity within research profiles, as well as part of large or ongoing qualification projects.
Client Service and Project Management
Receive prospect research requests from clients, managers, and development associates, provide input to determine the feasibility of research requests and special projects, and to negotiate project deadlines and scope of work when necessary.
Independently and proactively manage own workload and priorities, ensuring that all deadlines are met with quality products.
Provide ad hoc research on specific biographical or financial information relating to individuals, as requested or as part of ongoing projects.
Prospect Management and Information
Play a key role in OA prospect management and information management functions.
Serve as an expert on Georgetown University's prospect management policies and procedures.
Demonstrate a solid, detailed knowledge of the university's prospect pool, prospect management business processes, and the proper use and function of prospect's information in the database when conducting identification and research activities.
Answer questions regarding prospect management, and participate in regular portfolio reviews with prospect managers.
Generate and maintain accurate, useful Senior Prospect Research for the division.
Accurately and efficiently obtain information from both internal and external sources, including GU360 and various software application tools and external databases.
Compile data and documentation gathered in the course of research; ensure that it is distributed, organized, and archived properly. Notify data entry staff regarding new or updated biographical information; notify appropriate OA staff immediately regarding high-level or time sensitive information.
Identify and pursue opportunities to streamline the delivery or accessibility of information. As needed, assist with the distribution of regular Senior Prospect Research reports, such as daily e-mail information pushes and new leads reporting.
Participate in testing and review of reports and functionality related to the GU360 database and other tools and systems.
Safeguard the confidentiality of constituent information at all times; uphold OA policies regarding confidential information. Adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both Georgetown University and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).
Maintain awareness of issues within the development profession, and of the goals and activities of Georgetown University and its peer institutions.
Pursue ongoing professional development through participation in meetings, conferences, and related training opportunities offered by vendors, the University and professional organizations.
Participate in the planning and execution of departmental or divisional projects as a team member.
Represent the department as a member of internal and university committees, as needed.
Orient OA staff to the research and Senior Prospect Research resources offered by the DAG team; train them on the proper and efficient use and interpretation of internal research resources.
Perform related duties and assist with departmental projects as assigned.
Accurately and efficiently obtain information from both internal and external sources, including the GU360 database, various software application tools, and external databases.
Requirements & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
Minimum of two years of advancement research, development, fundraising and/or equivalent experience, specifically researching donors and prospects at the $1 million+ gift capacity level; Preference given to candidates with understanding of and competency with Apra's Advanced Skill Sets
High net worth research experience and knowledge of Advancement database/CRM systems
Demonstrated creative and flexible research skills, including the ability to analyze, interpret, summarize and present information effectively.
Skilled in reading and interpreting financial documents and information, including SEC documents/filings, thorough knowledge of financial terms, vehicles and types of transactions, as well as investment funds and strategy, and the finance, investment and alternative investment industries.
Demonstrated knowledge of prospect screening methodologies, services, tools, and their application in the identification of prospective donors.
Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to function well in a multiple-team environment, ability to prioritize and work independently, responsibly, and meet deadlines
Advanced general knowledge of the MS Office suite of applications (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) demonstrated ability to use online resources and databases creatively and effectively
Excellent verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to consistently produce concise, professional written communications
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, including executive level clients
Experience and references demonstrating scrupulous accuracy and attention to detail, including professional/business writing proficiency, as well as the ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and follow established protocols and procedures
Commitment to professional ethics, ability to apply an ethical code and good judgment; must be able to handle confidential materials and situations with sensitivity and discretion
