The University of Washington’s Department of Ophthalmology has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary, Full-Time Research Scientist 4.
The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will serve as a biostatistician addressing substantively important questions in Ophthalmology under the Lee lab. The position will include conducting data analyses, integrating data management, assisting with and taking the lead on manuscript writing, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals. There will be tremendous opportunity to grow as part of a very productive team. The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 is expected to bring his/her expertise in different statistical modeling and to develop independent research if desired.
25% Integrate data management for large prospective cohort studies with complex data structures, including genetic, clinical, study questionnaire, laboratory, pharmacy, and imaging data at multiple institutions. Lead the processing, documentation, storage, and retrieval of data for the Lee lab, with support of the project manager and the PI, and create relevant variables for use by study investigators. Communicate closely with research study personnel regarding changes and updates within the project.
50% Design, conduct, and write up appropriate statistical analyses to address critically important questions on clinical epidemiology studies in Ophthalmology •Collaborate with other investigators nationally and internationally on a variety of projects; identifying, developing and applying recent and new methodology; contribute to the organization and content of national and international meetings and workshops. •Plan and conduct a wide variety of data analyses, including developing analytic datasets, compiling results files, generating figures, and preparing tables. Models will include survival analysis and mixed models, hidden-Markov modeling, with careful diagnostics. Selection weights and techniques for missing data will be necessary. •After any necessary training, perform sophisticated statistical analyses of complex cognitive testing and other psychometric data using structural models.
10% Conduct preliminary studies and power calculations for grant proposals.
15% Write scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with relevant investigators at the University of Washington and at other institutions, foreign and domestic.
•Works independently with occasional oversight. •Applies independent problem solving requiring the application of existing and emerging scientific or engineering knowledge. •Develops new research or engineering methods and approaches; contributes toward development of strategies for problem solution. •Understands broad strategic objectives and contributes to them; nurtures and maintains relationships with major customers/grant sponsors/investigators of external research to identify and develop new funding sources; identifies grant/project extensions and persuades customers/grant sponsors to fund.May initiate new project concepts and seek funding; develops technical proposals and makes presentations to potential customers/grant sponsors. •Successfully manages multiple or significant projects, tasks or teams which may require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques; may evaluate proposed or ongoing projects; interfaces with customer/grant sponsor project managers and UW research/engineering management for existing or proposed projects. •Works effectively as a member of a team under technical guidance of seasoned staff; establishes productive relationships with co-workers, customers and others to accomplish team objectives; may guide the work of co-workers, students, research aides/assistants, technicians or other support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments. •Recognized for technical contributions by external peer networks; chairs sessions at technical meetings; gives invited papers
Requirements: Master’s Degree in Public Health, Biostatistics, or Statistics with a minimum of three to five years’ experience.
Statistical skills include:
•Conducting a wide variety of statistical analyses, including various longitudinal models. •Proficiency in R, Stata, or SAS (R preferable).
Communication skills include: •Presenting complex methods and findings clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences, both orally and in writing. •The diplomacy needed for local, national, and international collaboration, the tenacity to see projects completed, and the positivity to be a supportive and effective team member.
Other necessary skills include:
•The ability to manage dozens of papers and projects at the same time, always meeting key deadlines. •Meticulous attention to detail. •Organization and documentation habits so that research is easily reproducible.
Desired: Training in Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Experience with survival analyses and structural equations modeling.
