The Printing & Communications Sales Consultant role provides University departments with comprehensive communications services, including needs analysis and cost estimates for printed and electronic communications projects. Consultants build relationships with University staff by gaining a thorough understanding of University and departmental printing and communications goals, advising on effective and practical channels of communication, providing recommendations for printing production methods, and coordinating associated production plans. This position is responsible for maintaining a thorough understanding of the printing production process, understanding and advising on University brand standards, learning and applying knowledge of new communications technologies, and understanding relevant trends in higher education communications in order to successfully guide departments toward productive and cost-effective communications decisions. Internal responsibilities include providing production staff with accurate and timely project specifications, acting as a liaison between departmental customers and production staff, and collaborating with estimators, graphic designers, prepress operators, mailing staff, and the production manager to ensure high quality production standards and timely delivery of printed and electronic products that meet or exceed all customer expectations and successfully represents the University of Minnesota.
30% Account Development • Identifies and pursues new design, offset & digital printing, and mailing business opportunities within the University • Participates in campus communications groups • Develops and maintains long-term relationships with University customers • Explores additional prospects and expands the customer base by following up on leads and referrals • Advances and supports the ongoing/changing needs of customers by evaluating their goals in the context of the University’s overall mission • Collaborates with appropriate resources and develops effective printed and digital communication products that help customers meet their goals
25% Account Management • Maintains strong ongoing relationships with customers by providing support, information, and guidance • Researches and recommends solutions to printing and related communications challenges • Communicates with customers throughout the production process, providing samples, estimates, proofs, and recommendations for printing and finishing options • Collaborates with estimators, graphic designers, prepress operators, mailing staff, and the production manager to ensure high quality production standards and timely delivery of products • Coordinates production of printed materials and components with other internal and external services • Addresses production, timing, and quality challenges with customers in a timely, proactive, and collaborative manner • Demonstrates initiative and eagerness to help solve problems
20% Customer Service and other Duties • Provides support for Printing Services customers by interacting with co-workers and customers in a positive and respectful manner • Responds promptly to inquiries • Collaborates with the marketing and communications coordinator to optimize communications and marketing messaging • Actively engages with creative manager and graphic designers to contribute to social media campaigns, newsletters, blogs, etc. • Pursues educational opportunities and stays up-to-date on industry trends • Schedules and facilitates departmental facility tours
15% Estimating and Billing • Provides clear and detailed information on estimates and job tickets to ensure accurate estimate and/or production of projects • Utilizes the job management system to reference old jobs for ticket writing and to track jobs while in production • Reviews and bills jobs promptly and accurately • Informs customers during the production process of changes that may have an impact on final costs • Assists in setting challenging, yet attainable sales goals
10% Coordination of University Stationery • Acts as main point of contact for inquiries about official University stationery products, including questions about the ordering website, timing of orders, and University brand standards related to stationery • Works with departmental customers to place custom stationery orders • Communicates with production staff regarding stationery orders
Essential Functions of the Position

Work is performed in office environment, production plant, at various customer locations on the Twin Cities campus.
Salary: $58,000 - $62,000
Minimum Qualifications • BA/BS with at least four years of experience and/or a combination of related education and experience totaling eight years. • Demonstrated ability to understand and provide excellent customer service • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and demonstrated ability to learn and utilize new technology and software applications • Knowledge of various design, printing, mailing, and/or general communications processes (advanced knowledge preferred)
