The University of Minnesota Press seeks a Journals Manager to join its high-performing team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is motivated to take charge of a small program and develop new opportunities to expand the business. The successful candidate will be a proactive and adaptable team player and will be an excellent communicator. The Journals Manager will split their time between managerial/administrative and EDP work. They will manage the relationships with journal editorial groups, including those owned by scholarly associations and those edited by a collective of scholars; will launch new journals as they are acquired; will be responsible for the Editorial, Design, and Production processes; and will manage the relationships with our print and online subscription services providers. The Journals Manager reports to the Production and Design Manager, and will work closely with the Editorial Director and Associate Director on strategic business decisions.
Managerial and Administrative functions (40%) Manage relationships with journal editors and associations. Provide guidance to conform to standards and procedures and adhere to regular schedules. Manage overall production workflow and software tools. Preside at monthly journals division meeting. Report regularly on subscriptions and revenue. Manage relationships with outside vendors and freelancers. Supervise student worker(s). Manage distribution & subscription management partnerships, and other vendor business agreements. Devise strategies to increase revenue and reduce costs. Advise editorial director and business office on potential acquisitions. Manage launch of new journals.
Editorial, Design, and Production (60%) Review and troubleshoot manuscript, artwork, and documentation for each issue; resolve problems. Prepare images for production. Apply XML structuring to manuscript. Prepare art, permissions, and publication history logs. Transmit manuscripts and artwork to copy editors and packagers. Review all stages of page proof. Coordinate advertisements. Order manufacturing and transfer files to printer. Compile and transfer digital files to aggregators such as JSTOR.
Qualifications Required: BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Art or related field plus two years of publishing experience, or six years combined equivalent education and experience; proven project management skills
Preferred: Proven project management ability; Strong editing and proofreading skills; knowledge of book print production; knowledge of XML for book publishing workflow; facility with Adobe Creative Suite.
