The Office of Pre-Professional Advising serves undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering pursuing professional education in medicine, other health professions, and law. The mission of the office is to encourage students to pursue a holistic approach to their education, to be reflective about their learning, and to demonstrate social responsibility and a commitment to service. Pre-Professional Advisors provide academic advising, support throughout the professional school application process, and career counseling. Primary attention is focused on applicants to health professions and law schools in preparation for and during the application process.
The Director is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the Office, including development of programs and policies; the management of staff, budget, and strategic initiatives; and ensuring continuing assessment of programs and services. As an advocate for students in the pursuit of their professional goals, the Director works to establish collaborations, within Johns Hopkins and external to the University, which promote student success and the overall mission of the Office. This necessitates a balanced program of pre-professional advising, workshops and educational programs, diversity initiatives, and outreach to professional schools. This position reports to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision and Management:
In addition to the managerial duties above, the Director oversees and supervises three pre-professional advisors and three administrative support staff. An Associate Director with prelaw credentials and advising experience assists prelaw students in selecting a
major, securing relevant experience, and applying to law school, and sponsors programs in support of these endeavors. Supervision of the Health Professions Committee Process also includes recruitment, training, and oversight of three consultants serving on a Review Committee and a team
of graduate students who assist with the writing of Committee Letters.
The Health Professions Committee Process:
Eligible applicants to medical and dental school, approximately 425 annually, participate in the Health Professions Committee Process and have a committee letter written on their behalf. The Process involves preparing and administering applications, overseeing the recommendation letter collection service, assembling a team to review applications, and producing a committee letter. An applicant’s strengths, attributes, and competencies are summarized in this letter that accompanies individual letters of recommendation and is forwarded to medical and dental schools.
The Director serves as pre-professional advisor to undergraduate students and alumni and offers one-on-one appointments, telephone consultations, and e-mail correspondence. Direct advising includes such areas as course and major selection, academic support, professional school application advice, and general career advising. The advising staff also helps student to take advantage of ancillary experiences where applicable including clinical exposure, internships, community service opportunities, summer academic enrichment, post-baccalaureate enhancement and masters programs. Prominent is advising of applicants throughout the professional school application process. Specific attention is paid to the sub-populations of underrepresented minorities in health care, applicants to MD/PhD programs, and applicants to other health professions.
Internal and External Relations and Outreach:
On the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus, the Director insures liaison relationships with academic departments and administrative units in the Whiting School of Engineering, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and Homewood Student Affairs. Externally, relationships are developed and maintained with leadership at the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at Johns Hopkins, as well as the Kennedy Krieger Institute. External to the University, the Director represents Johns Hopkins to medical, law, and other professional schools and their professional associations, both as a spokesperson for the program as well as an advocate for applicants. In addition to hosting individual programs featuring representatives of health professions and law schools and respective professional associations, the oversight includes the sponsoring of bi-annual health and prelaw fairs.
Promoting the Success of Underrepresented Students:
The Office is a partner office supporting the JUMP (Johns Hopkins Underrepresented in Medical Professions), a program that promotes access to and a pathway for success in careers in medicine and the health professions for students from underrepresented populations. In tandem with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office for Student Diversity at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the Director assists in facilitating a learning community that provides academic support, mentoring, community building, career exploration and leadership.

The position requires a master’s or professional degree (doctoral level preferred) with 5 – 10 years of experience in professional school advising or professional school admissions.
Special consideration will be given to experience in medical or law school advising.
The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership and managerial experience; excellent interpersonal, verbal, written communication and advising skills; excellent project management skills; a student-centered approach to advising and leadership; and a demonstrated understanding of the mission of a complex, decentralized research university.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
