Position Overview: The Purchasing Agent is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with suppliers to deliver timely, high-quality products to customers

Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Essential Job Functions:
Negotiate with vendors for goods and services for best price and service guarantee, while working to build positive, co-creative relationships.
Purchase materials required for production, according to inventory management plan.
Examine bids and make awards.
Establish account/credit and terms.
Identify and evaluate new suppliers.
Check requisitions for appropriate approval and account numbers.
Work closely with Plant Manager to assure accurate shipments arrive timely.
Work closely with Engineering to assure suppliers are meeting quality and engineering specifications.
Encourage Engineering in developing simple, efficient, manufacturable product designs.
Track and trace delinquent arrivals.
Follow environmental and safety regulations and act in compliance with U.S. laws, as well as company guidelines for business ethics.
Contact suppliers to verify shipments, as needed.
Assist with development of appropriate order quantities based on production, demand, and lead times.
After order has been put through:~ Ensure Bill of Materials (BOM) and routing are checked ~ Generate Shop orders ~ Release Shop orders ~ Print/separate shop packets ~ Distribute Pick Lists to inventory control associates ~ Distribute shop packet to Metal Shop Supervisors
Close job when it is completed
Update activity transactions; mark operation complete
Check material (Issue out material until material is issued at machines using the system)

Thorough working knowledge of purchasing policies, processes and procedures.
Complete knowledge of warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures.
Knowledge of material work planning and methods engineering processes and procedures.
Knowledge relating to metal manufacturing company.
Ability to negotiate vendor terms, pricing and delivery based on specific budget and schedule requirements. Able to adjust approach according to tolerances required for each job.

Computer literate.Understanding of how inventory is managed in ERP systems.Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills required.
Strong analytical skills required. Must be detail-oriented and pay close attention to accuracy.

Proficiency in reading prints.
Project management skills.
Must be able to work quickly and independently with minimal supervision.
Education and/or Experience:
Ability to use tape measure, calipers, and other appropriate measuring and checking equipment.
Three to five years purchasing experience in manufacturing environment, preferably in metal manufacturing desired.
Experience with ERP/inventory control systems.
Some college preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to dust and other particles found as part of the wood and metal manufacturing process. May be exposed to variable weather conditions. Other conditions may include proximity to forklifts or other heavy machinery and using various tools and hardware.
