This assistant editor will help assign and edit web stories with a focus on culture and lifestyle, including everything from music and art to travel, food, and sports. The person who takes this position will report to the digital managing editor while working closely with the lifestyle and culture editors, helping them to plan and coordinate coverage across platforms. Initiative will be rewarded. The more creative and ambitious the assistant digital editor is, the more he or she will be able to shape the job—and our editorial content.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Line editing with rigor and inspiring writers to do their best work
Project management of digital series as determined in consultation with other editors
Crafting display type for print, web, and social media
Updating web pages consistently and looking for innovative ways to use archival content
Communicating clearly and diplomatically
Maintaining the website’s editorial tone and integrity. Serving as editor, and sometimes copy editor and fact-checker, for published posts
Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities:
Great facility with language
Skill at writing good headlines
Enthusiasm for using modern web tools to tell stories
A knack for developing unique story angles
Precise line-editing chops
An ability to make deadlines and to help writers do so
Two to five years’ experience editing, in print or online, preferred
Experience working in a fast-paced, news-driven environment
Knowledge of WordPress, Slack, and Adobe
Knowledge of best social media practices and SEO
Experience with video or audio production
Project management experience
Fluency in Spanish
