POSITION: KVA is offering a rotating externship experience to a veterinary student that is interested in developing their skills and knowledge base in equine general practice. This is the front line of equine veterinary medicine. GOAL: Our goal is purely to give back to the veterinary community by providing the invaluable experience needed for a successful career as an equine practitioner. We understand the importance of exposure and experience during your time as a veterinary student. Even if you plan on focusing on a specialty in equine practice, a good understanding of equine general practice is critical for effective communication and a positive working relationship with the rDVMs. All experience levels are welcome because we feel we are here to teach and you are here to learn. It’s like vet school, but more fun! ABOUT US: WE ARE… a busy, 4 doctor, exclusively equine, ambulatory practice with a beautiful haul-in clinic in South Central Pennsylvania between Harrisburg and Lancaster. The clinic doubles as an AI breeding and foaling facility, sitting atop ~80 fertile acres of land. We provide office space, treatment/foaling barns, indoor arena, exam area, pharmacy, and in house bloodwork (CBC, serum chemistry, fibrinogen, SAA). The veterinarians and four support staff are a dedicated healthcare team of professionals who value exceptional care, continuing education, work ethic and positive attitude. We welcome a veterinary student that aligns with those values, does well in a team setting, and is a good communicator. Our services include: progressive preventive health care (modern strategic deworming, vaccination), lameness/sports medicine (shockwave therapy, digital ultrasound, wireless digital radiography, thermography, Lameness LocatorTM), pre-purchase examinations, reproduction services (embryo transfer, AI – fresh and frozen semen breeding, reproductive ultrasound), dentistry (PowerfloatTM), geriatric medicine, foal care, myelography, field surgeries (based on doctor discretion by case and standards of care - castration, wound repair, enucleation, hernia repair), chiropractic, and URT endoscopy (1m). Our patients range from companion equine to performance/sport horse. We also provide on call/emergency services (24/7/365), which is shared between all veterinarians on a rotating basis. We have an excellent reputation in our community and great rapport with our local veterinary colleagues (large and small) and farriers. We are in range of multiple equine referral centers and can easily consult with board certified specialists. We strive to maintain a good working relationship with these specialists, as we consider them part of our team. EXPECTATIONS: This experience is not meant to be high pressure. Our expectations are simply that you are professional, kind, punctual, willing to learn and willing to get your hands dirty, or clean (if aseptic technique is indicated). The student will assist with in-house cases, field cases, and emergencies (during and after hours). We encourage questions and dialogue. If it’s fun for you it will be fun for us too. HOUSING: Housing with full amenities will be provided. REQUIREMENTS: - Enrollment in an AVMA accredited veterinary school.
- CV (or resume) and a cover letter
- Proof of student insurance coverage through your veterinary college.
- Minimum commitment of 2 weeks.
