Departmental Overview
Summer Sessions, Study Abroad & Lifelong Learning (SSALL) is a vibrant and dynamic organization that enables more than 15,000 visiting, UC and potential Cal students; parents, faculty, academic units, international business partners, and central campus service providers participate in providing more than 600 summer courses, study abroad experiences, global internships, and year-around program or courses, lectures, special events and interest circles for older adults. SSALL is committed to offering quality, innovative learning experiences through open enrollment to a diverse audience of world-wide learners, while supporting the campus missions and commitments to its stakeholders.
Berkeley Study Abroad administers the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP), and provides advising on the process of study abroad for options beyond UCEAP, including Berkeley Summer Abroad and Global Internships.
Responsibilities
- The incumbent serves on a team of six Regional Advisers, and reports to the Assistant Director of Advising.
- Under general supervision, has responsibility and authority for a comprehensive program of student recruitment, advising, selection, and orientation.
- Provides appropriate academic and administrative advising during front counter shifts to current and prospective study abroad students for all 406 UCEAP programs spanning 45 countries.
- Independently interprets, applies, and enforces campus and Systemwide Office of UCEAP policies.
- Collaborates with Campus academic advisers in the various Colleges and academic departments to consult about study abroad options, processes, participation rates, and to facilitate the integration of study abroad coursework with UCB major and degree requirements.
- Reads and evaluates student applications, selects students for admission, sets conditions and ensures compliance.
- Serves as first contact for selection outcome appeals and student problems.
- Responsible for retention of students in the program.
- Represents BSA at outreach and orientation events.
- Acts as liaison with other campus offices: Registrar, Financial Aid, University Health Service, Colleges and Schools, and academic departments.
- Assists in program administration and makes recommendations for improvements to Director.
- Advisers are also assigned project management duties and are responsible for overseeing specific areas of work beyond program advising. These areas may include: Staff Training, Information Management, Reciprocity, Orientation, Peer Advising, Student Health and Disability Issues, Financial Aid and Scholarships, and Academic Integration.
- Will be required to work some evenings and weekends to participate in advising and outreach activities on and off campus, and to attend professional meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills sufficient to clearly explain academic and administrative policies, procedures, and practices to diverse groups (students, faculty, and staff), community members, campus units, system wide office and professional organizations.
- Demonstrated student service commitment and ability to advise effectively on academic, procedural, and student life issues.
- Experience in international education administration, preferably in a study abroad office.
- Demonstrated knowledge of international higher education systems and cross-cultural issues.
- Experience in an undergraduate academic environment with knowledge of UC policies/procedures, or ability to learn.
- Demonstrated ability working as a productive member of a team and ability to show initiative and work independently, accurately, and with attention to detail.
- Experience working in an environment responsible for maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
- Strong analytical skills, ability to learn quickly, and apply knowledge to new problems.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to coordinate projects, anticipate deadlines and adjust priorities when dealing with competing and complex tasks;
- Ability to work under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
- Experience in complex records management, statistical, database, and word processing software
Education/Training:
- B.A. or B.S. Degree and a minimum of two years' experience in international higher education advising and administration and/or equivalent experiece/training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience advising for students at the University of California; participation in the UC Education Abroad Program; experience with virtual advising; experience developing and delivering webinars; knowledge of a second language; knowledge of FERPA regulations; experience in public speaking, event planning, and program publicity.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $60,000.00 - $72,800.00.
